Outline: 1-page MAX (single-spaced)
Research Sample: ~250 words

In preparation for the research essay, you will produce a focussed, workable thesis statement to direct your argument and guide the reader (IE: Prof. Noman). Additionally, you will draft an outline that summarizes the essay’s key points (in order) so as to help you organize your ideas toward producing a coherent and unified argument.

THIS OUTLINE IS FOR THE RESEARCH ESSAY ASSIGNMENT.

OUTLINE:

Write out a short introduction to your essay. Bold the passage that you believe is the thesis statement.
Organize the steps of your argument in brief. You may use section headings and subheadings if you like.
1. Refer to the example provided on Brightspace, but remember that there are many ways to structure a paper and to write an outline.
2. Note that your final paper will not include section headings.
Keep it short and point-form – an outline is only useful if it helps you to visualize the structure of your argument.
Do not write a conclusion.
This outline is a guidepost, not a contract. You may change any and all details when writing and revising your essay. This includes changing your topic entirely.

RESEARCH SAMPLE:

Locate a relevant scholarly journal article from the university library
Write out works cited entry for the source
Summarize the source’s main point (argument) or a claim that you can apply to your own essay. (50-100 words)
Select a quotation from the source that might be useful in your research essay.
Comment on the selected primary text (story or poem) and use the quotation as part of that commentary. (75-150 words, not including the quotation and citation)
Include a proper in-text citation when quoting.
