What am I required to do in this assignment?

Assessment 2: Qualitative Research Skills Portfolio

You will complete different practical tasks and situations each week. Tasks must be written up and independent learning and reading undertaken and recorded as a workbook, and you will get verbal feedback about your personal skills progress regularly. This assessment will develop your ability to observe in real life settings, teach you how to collect data and then how to handle and analyse the data. It will require you to be reflective about your progress and be analytical each week. Each task is equally weighted.

What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations from UIF)

Complete a reflective research E-portfolio that comprises various practical research tasks such as observation, note taking, coding, and interview technique. Reflect upon your own journey as a new qualitative researcher

How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?

1. You must engage with the practical tasks week by week in the workshops.
2. You need to ‘keep up to date’ in the workbook entries
3. You need to apply the theories to the practical tasks.
4. You need to have a feasible ethnographic focus (COVID) and carry out your independent study from design to analysis.
5. You must show a good quality of grammar and writing.

How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?

During online and face to face learning you will engage with research philosophies and paradigms for qualitative research (ontologies, epistemologies). You will learn how to position your own research. Research methodologies: case study, cross-sectional research ethnography / auto-ethnography and narrative research will be discussed. Research methods: interviewing and focus groups, naturalistic observation, photo elicitation, collating existing sources, documentary methods will be practically embedded into the workshops. Week by week the workbook task will form the center of the learning and you will be able to do the majority of the workbook entry in class. You will practice analysis techniques: thematic analysis, discourse analysis, grounded theory, coding and interpretation with support. The later entries will allow for some independent study – picking a focus, entering a setting ethically, collecting data, applying a sociological lens, writing and displaying data.

How will my assignment be marked?

Your assignment will be marked according to the threshold expectations and the criteria on the following page.

You can use them to evaluate your own work and consider your grade before you submit.
