Bridget Swift HorneSaturdaySep 18 at 11:45amManage Discussion EntrySome 30 years ago HIV/Aids was a death sentence. In 2011, 35 million people were living with HIV/Aids. African Americans are the most affected race. Male to male sexual contact ranks the highest in transmission. Intravenous drugs use ranks second. In the late 80s a friend of mine was diagnosed with Aids. Within a month he died. Working in the healthcare field I have seen the development of new treatments and medication. People living with HIV/Aids life expectancy has increased. HIV medication can be costly. The Health Department has a program to help assist with medication.Hepatitis has more that one form B and C. Both are known to damage the liver. Hepatitis B is the common cause for liver disease. This happens when blood is infected and transmitted by bodily fluids. Hepatitis C is blood borne. It is a viral disease that kills liver cells. The Department of health test for all of these diseases. HIV, you can make an appointment and get tested. For Hepatitis B/C the only way to be tested is through court order or risky behavior.

Alcohol has been around for centuries and used by many cultures. Made from ingredients that were considered fermented. Alcohol was used to get rid of pain. Also used for celebrations. During the Civil War of 1790 the law required that each soldier get one-fourth pint of brandy, rum or whiskey weekly.Cocaine was known to South American Indians for thousands of years. It typically comes from the leaf called Erythroxylum coca. It could be chewed for medical purposes always for sexual arousal. Cocaine was initially formed to sniff. Later it was turned into a rock that could be smoked called crack.
Morphine originated from the poppy plant. By splitting the plant you could swallow the resin for pain. Doctors used it for medical purposes by using syringes for injections. In the late 1800s morphine could be given as a subscription.
Marijuana comes from the Hemp plant. Marijuana had many purposes for clothing, paper and rope. Marijuana is used for medicinal purposes such as epilepsy and glaucoma.
Amphetamines were used to treat depression and for weight loss. Derived from amphetamines came methamphetamine. Which is a street drug made in homemade labs. In comes in many forms such as crystal, powder and pills. Crystal meth is used by young people for parties.
Hallucinogens such a mushrooms were used by Central American Indians for religious ceremonies. LSD is known as the truth drug. LSD have been used for treatment cancer and schizophrenia.
Tobacco was used as form of currency. Tabaco leaves were made into cigarettes’. As time has passed tobacco has become harmful and addictive. The major problem with smoking has caused cancer.
Through the course of my reading this material I didnt realize the many uses for these drugs. Also, at one point some of these drugs were legal.
3.The terminology helps determine the severity of the problem. Everyone is not the same and needs to be treated differently. Some individuals may need coaching whereas some may need to go into a treatment facility. Miss diagnosis can be harmful to patient.

Shawnita McdonaldSaturdaySep 18 at 3:23pmManage Discussion EntryThe first impression I did is that people with HIV and HCV do not look or feel sick. There are also many that do not know they have either. More people have died from HCV than HIV/AIDS in the United States.
Regarding alcohol (in neolithic times), when it became known that juice was produced and provided relief from discomfort, they started to produce alcoholic drinks. This broadened my understanding because many used alcohol during those times to relieve discomfort. In these times, it seems alcohol is mainly used to numb past or present traumas, and to relieve stress.
Cocaine, just like alcohol has been around for thousands and thousands of years. It derives from the Coca plant. Anti cocaine legislation started I’m at the top after instances of violence and dangerous effects increased. The Harrison Narcotics act of 1914 passed by Congress imposed taxes on products with cocaine in them. It wasn’t long after that the DEA made cocaine illegal. This broadened my understanding on the reason that cocaine became illegal.
Opium was referred to by the Sumerians as the “joy plant”. This helped my understanding because Hippocrates acknowledge its usefulness as a narcotic.
Regarding marijuana, the main concept that comes to my mind is it is a blessing and a curse. Though it is legalized and has a lot of medical uses (blessing) just like tobacco it still can irritate the lungs and put one at risk for lung cancers (curse).
Amphetamines or sometimes used as performance enhancements. This piece of information alone helps me understand how easy it is for tolerance to build up. Drugabuse.com/stimulants/amphetamines
Hallucinogens will distort ones perception of reality. This concept helped me understand that addiction is not as common with hallucinogens as other substances, but dependency still can lead to one acting violently or erratic. Recoveryvillage.com/hallucinogens-addictions
Tobacco contains a stimulant called nicotine that’s highly addictive. Continued use of tobacco will increase the risk for lung related cancers and other lung related issues.
When it comes to the terminology of substance use, I believe it was necessary for it to be changed. My reasoning for saying this is that because sometimes like “drug addict” rather than “drug user” can be offensive. Same with the term “substance abuse”, the term “substance use disorder” is definitely a better term. Words should heal an addict not hurt.
