This is a simulated exercise in reporting and structuring a news story. Under no circumstances are you to track down and contact the stakeholders in this story! All the facts you need to successfully complete this assignment are included on this page. Also, you have the option of reaching out to me with specific questions for the stakeholders/sources. I will pretend to be those people and supply you with a response. Again, do NOT reach out to anyone named in this story.
Expectations:
• Your story should be written in the inverted news pyramid structure.
• Your story should be at least six paragraphs and no more than eleven. Keep in mind that news paragraphs are very short!
• I’m not giving you a word count to hit. Focus on clear, informative, short paragraphs.
• The first paragraph should be a “summary lead,” also known as a “direct lead” or “hard news lead.”
• The story should include a bridge.
• The story should include body paragraphs.
• The story should not include a conclusion. The story should simply end.
• We haven’t practiced writing headlines yet, so you are not required to include one. But give
it a go, if you’d like. See the “Tips for Writing Headlines” at the end of this document. Don’t try to write the headline before you finish writing the story. Write the headline last!
Scenario:
• Pretend you are a reporter for the Washington Post
• Pretend you are reporting this story on Friday
• Pretend you have collected all of the below-listed facts.
• Pretend 2020 and 2021 were “normal” years in which the world was NOT impacted by COVID-19. (We can dream a little, can’t we)
• Work from the presumption that all the facts below are verified and accurate.
• I encourage you to think of specific questions you’d like to ask specific stakeholders in the story. Post your questions to the “Breaking Story – Dodger Stadium” thread on the Big Forum discussion board before Thursday night! I will pretend to be each stakeholder, and I will respond to your questions ASAP. Be sure to say which stakeholder you are asking the question to.
