Physical Environment

● Boundaries

What defines the boundaries? Roads, water, railroads. Is the area known for a particular name? What area is this community located in?

Magnolia is a smaller city not far from the Houston area. The boundaries are defined by roads and Magnolia sits in the middle of other areas. This community is in the 77534 area code.

● Housing and Zoning

What is the age of the houses? Describe type of construction material, appearance, and general condition. Do you see single family housing? Multi-family housing?

The houses vary as some look much newer than others. However, most of the homes are larger and appear to be well kept. There is construction occurring on 2978, which is one of the main areas leading into Magnolia from the neighboring community, The Woodlands. The construction appears to be related to expansion of the roads. I saw both multi-family and single family housing within the ten block radius that I observed.

● Common Meeting Places

Where do people in the neighborhood hang out? Who hangs out there and what hours of the day?

I started my navigation at Iron Will Sports Training Facility on Tamina Rd as it was filled with activity. There were many people training when I visited at 4pm on a Thursday afternoon. Across from this facility was a crossfit facility and next door on the left was a baseball training facility. To the right was an ATV store with several large vehicles displayed out front. The people ranged in age from young children to older adults.

● Indicators of Growth or Decline

Is this a “thriving” community or does it look “run down?” Is there new or ongoing construction? es and Industries coming to the area? Are buildings, roadways, and public areas clean and well-kept? Do you see dirt, trash, or graffiti?
This is a thriving community with many new businesses and new strip centers. There are several buildings, but none are skyscrapers or exceptionally larger. The public areas are clean and well-kept with no signs of dirt, trash, or graffiti.

What places for employment are there is this area? Name the businesses and industries in this area.

● Transportation

How to people get from one place to another? Is public transportation available? How timely is it? Personal autos? Bikes? Walking?

I did not see any public transportation in the area. I saw people driving cars, riding motorcycles, and a few people on bicycles. I also saw people walking but it looks like they were just traveling from their vehicles to the business they were attending.

People

● Race and Ethnicity

What is the majority racial group represented? What is the majority ethnic group represented? Describe the distribution of gender, approximate ages, single families, multiple families, generational families?

I saw mainly Caucasian people but I did see some Hispanic, Black, and Asian people. The ages varied from the very young to the elderly. Some people were sitting as families and many people frequenting the businesses on Tamina Rd were by themselves. I did not see any generational families. The gender was more heavily male as there were so many fitness centers in one area.

● Cultural Characteristics

What cultural similarities or differences do you observe? Languages spoken? Clothing? Ethnic eating places? Culturally based celebrations? Signs in languages other than English?

I didn’t really notice any cultural aspects or additional languages. The only thing that stood out was The Chipper restaurant as its symbol was a British flag.

●Lifestyle Healthy Behaviors

What healthy lifestyle behaviors do you observe? Do you see people exercising, wearing helmets when biking, seat belt usage, using trash cans for garbage disposal, healthy eating practices?
I saw people exercising in many different ways and the people on bikes were wearing helmets. There were plenty of trash cans for garbage disposal. I did find it ironic that although there were so many gyms in the area, the food area was mostly greasy and fattening foods with little sprinklings of healthy options.

● Lifestyle Risk Behaviors

What unhealthy lifestyle behaviors do you observe? Do you see people practicing risky lifestyle behaviors such as drinking alcoholic beverages, smoking, fighting? Do you see signs of violence, gang activity, drug use, criminal activity, and bars on doors and/or windows? Do you see overweight/underweight persons? Do you see children unattended playing out in the streets? Describe gender, age, and race/ethnicity of persons observed.
I did not see any people smoking or engaging in illegal substances. I did see people consuming alcohol at Bricks & Brews but it was all in good fun in a social environment. I did not see any signs of violence, gangs, criminal activity, or bars. There were a couple of overweight people. As previously stated, I saw more men and they were mostly white men in early to late adulthood.

● Poverty Indications

Do you see any signs of homelessness? People living without adequate shelter or in temporary shelter? Describe gender, age, and race/ethnicity of persons observed.
I did not see any signs of homelessness.

Services in the Community

Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area, how far away it is and how people will access it.

● Social Services

Do you see evidence of recreation centers, parks, and social services? For services that are not available, how far must persons travel to access these services? Describe each.

Oddly enough, I did not see any recreation centers, parks, or social services. You would need to travel about 7 miles into the neighboring community to access these services.

● Health Services

Do you see evidence of health (Hospitals, Dr’s Offices, Clinics) and mental health services? Describe each. Are there any signs of alternative services in the area, such as healers (curanderos), herbalists, herbal stores, palm readers, acupunctures, chiropractors? For services that are not available, how far must persons travel to access these services?

The only evidence of health I saw was one doctor’s office and a dentist. I did not see any others and you would have to travel 10 miles to reach these.

● Fire and Police Services

Do you see any fire and police services/equipment/officers? Where are the closest fire and/or police stations?
I did not see any of these. The closest fire station was 10 miles away.

● Educational Resources

Where is the nearest public library? Discuss the Schools and Universities/Community colleges?

I did not see a library or any university.

● Religions

What signs of religion do you see? Discuss the types of churches, mosques, temples. What services are offered by these places of worship? e.g., Day Care, Mother’s Day Out, Summer Camps, Languages Classes, Citizenship Classes, Food Banks, Clothing, other.
The only thing I saw from this category was ABC daycare center.

& Industry

Describe stores and shops available in the community, e.g., grocery stores, gas stations, department stores. What type of business climate exists? Manufactures? Light or heavy industry? Large employers? Small business owners? Retail? Hospitality industry? Do people have to seek employment elsewhere? Is this considered a “bedroom community”- where people work outside this community but live here?

There were fitness stores, grocery stores, clothing stores, gas stations, but no other large businesses or department stores. It appears that most people in this area are employed elsewhere but choose to travel further for more peace.

Politics

What indicators do you see about politics? Posters? Headquarters?

There were no indicators of politics which I found odd.

Media

Do you see indicators of what people read? Listen to the radio? Watch TV? Are there any signs of media language other than English?

I did not see any signs of what people read. However, there was lots of country music and pop music being played by passing cars and businesses.

1. Interview with fireman or police officer

˃ Community’s Health issues
JM is a police officer. The most pressing health issue is weight as Texas is a larger state. There are no drug issues in the area but some mental health issues.

˃ Community’s Safety issues
Crime has recently increased but it is likely related to the pandemic. Most people know their neighbors well and feel safe and secure in this community.
˃ Strengths of the Community
It is small, there are many families, there isn’t any homelessness as there is nowhere for them to congregate, and most of the residents make a good living. There are many planned activities to help people get to know each other better.

˃ Community’s Health issues
SA is a schoolteacher and she reports that undiagnosed developmental delays is an issue. There are too many parents that don’t want to appropriately label their children for fear of being stigmatized.

˃ Community’s Safety issues
SA is worried about crime as this is a nicer community and she has noticed more drifters than usual.
˃ Strengths of the Community
It’s a great family environment and people are very neighborly. Also, it’s a smaller community and everyone knows each other.

Analysis of Windshield Survey

Analyze and summarize your observations and the input from key informants. Write a 3-paragraph summary of community health (2) and safety (1) issues for this community and strengthens of the community. Remember to cite personal communication as appropriate:
Magnolia is a smaller community and it is nice and bustling with activity. The grounds are well kept and there were no signs of the normal negative aspects of a community. Additionally, this community appears to be growing in a positive way.

The main safety issue noted for this community was increasing crime (J. Mosling and S.Augustine, personal communication, April 8, 2021). There were no reports of murders or major crimes. The major incidents were petty thefts.
The greatest strength of this community is that it is very family friendly. There are also plenty of places to get a good workout and practice good health. The community is also clean and well-kept.
