In this discussion forum, you should integrate the materials on theoretical approaches to cognition, neural basis of cognition and the social & environmental factors that influence the brain. In this post you should explain how the brain changes in response to interacting developmental and contextual factors. I recognize that this topic might bring up a lot of questions. Some of the challenges and adversity may apply to your life or someone close to you. 1. First, briefly discuss your understanding of the social or environmental challenges that impact development and the brain. Make sure to use in text citations to reference the different readings and videos in this part of the response.
2. Second, discuss how you can apply this knowledge to working with children. Some example topics you could discuss are:
1. How could schools be a positive or negative influence in the lives of children who have faced adversity? What routines or systems could you set up in your classroom or OST program to support children?
2. What are some positive parenting practices that can help brain development? What are the environmental factors that parents have control of and what are the ones that are difficult to control? As an educator how can you support parents to provide these kinds of experiences?
3. Finally, how can you apply this to making societal changes? What types of interventions can be successful in improving the brains and lives of children? What is one policy or policy change would you recommend based on what you have learned?
