Helping Interaction Paper

Each student will watch two videos of a helper and helpee and be asked to write a paper reflecting on the interactions. The two videos are titled on Gauchospace “Effective Helping Skills Video” and “Ineffective Helping Skills Video.” The content of the paper should address the following points.

For the “Effective Helping Skills Video” please make sure to address the following:

· Provide a description of the interaction you viewed.
· Identify and discuss what helping skills you observed. Describe which skills you noted as being most helpful and how you determined this (e.g., reaction of client).
· Imagining you were the helper in this interaction, which aspects of the interaction do you imagine would have been most challenging for you?
· What do you imagine it would have been like to be the helpee in this interaction? Describe what it may have felt like to receive help from the helper in this interaction.

For the “Ineffective Helping Skills Video” please make sure to address the following:

· Provide a description of the interaction you viewed.
· Identify and discuss what therapist behaviors (verbal and nonverbal) you observed that appeared to be unhelpful in the interaction.
· What do you imagine it would have been like to be the helpee in this interaction? Describe what it may have felt like to receive help from the helper in this interaction.

Finally, please reflect on:
· Reflect onhow viewing these videos may affect your approach to helping and future plans for engaging in helping relationships; What have you taken away from the experience?

Papers should be between 1000-1300 words. Please use general APA format (no need for reference page for videos, you can refer to them as labeled above):

21-25 = Content reflects insightful identification, description and discussion of a range of helping skills. At least 4helping skills are identified.

16-20 = Content reflects accurate identification, description and discussion of a limited range of helping skills. At least 2 helping skills are identified.

11-15 = Content reflects very limited number of helping skills (< 2), inaccurate description of most helping skills, or fails to identify helping skills. Identification, description and discussion of verbal and nonverbal behaviors observed to be unhelpful (in the Ineffective Helping Skills Video) 8-10 = Content reflects insightful identification, description and discussion of a range of “unhelpful” verbal and nonverbal behaviors by the therapist in the video. 6-7 = Content reflects accurate and appropriateidentification of a few “unhelpful” verbal and/or nonverbal behaviors by the therapist in the video. 4-5 = Content reflects a very limited number of only “unhelpful” verbal (or only nonverbal) behaviors by the therapist in the video. Reflection on what it would have been like to be the helper in the “Effective Helping Skills Video” 12-15 = The reflection is clearly articulated and demonstrates reflection and insight. 8-11 = The student’s reflection is addressed to a limited degree. 4-7 = The reflection is very minimal or not addressed. Reflection on what it would have been like to be the helpee in BOTH videos 12-15 = The reflection is clearly articulated and demonstrates reflection and insight for BOTH videos. 8-11 = The student’s reflection is addressed briefly for BOTH videos, or adequately for one video. 4-7 = The reflection is not addressed or is very minimal. Reflection on how the experience may affect your approach to helping and future plans for engaging in helping relationships; what have you taken away from the experience 13-15 = The influence of the experience on the student’s approach to helping and future plans is clearly articulated and demonstrates reflection and insight. 10-12 = The influence of the experience on the student’s approach to helping and future plans is addressed to a limited degree. 7-9= The influence of the experience on the student’s approach to helping and future plans is not addressed. Clarity and organization of writing 8-10 = The paper is well-organized, clearly written, and free from grammatical errors. 6-7 = The paper has some notable problems with clarity, organization, or grammar. 4-5 = The problems with organization, clarity, and grammar render the paper incomprehensible.
