You will write a book review (not a book report) for this grade. In addition to this book, when writing the review, you should consult two scholarly articles about the subject matter of your book.

Book Review, While your book review will be written in a standard narrative format (Turabian documentation style 4 Pages doubled spaced) with documentation .

A review is a critical evaluation of a text, event, object, or phenomenon. The beginning of a book review should consist of bibliographic information of the book under review. For this assignment you will include a bibliography of the additional scholarly sources you use. A separate bibliography is not a part of a published review but you will complete for this academic work.

Additionally,

1.a review gives the reader a concise summary of the content. This includes a relevant description of the topic as well as its overall perspective, argument, or purpose. (Chapter readings serve as practice for creating a concise summary)

2.a review offers a critical assessment of the content.

3.A review should have a conclusion- a reassessment of the authors work and if and to who should read this book.

This assignment asks you to consider the book Ordinary Men and to evaluate the book. The form of writing here is what historians call a historical monograph, which is a tightly focused book on a single subject.

Good writing is always focused and seeks to make a point. What I want you to do with this assignment is to analyze the argument that the author, Christopher Browning, puts forward in the book.

The idea Browning has here is pretty straightforward: Seemingly “ordinary men” perpetrated some of the most atrocious crimes against humanity in the opening months of World War II. Shortly after the invasion of Poland, the event that sparked the beginning of World War II, the German military came under control of many, many nongermane individuals. c. According to Nazi ideology, peoples to the East, so-called Slavic Peoples (a word that comes from the word slave), were racial inferior. Some places in Poland had as many as 25% Jewish populations. Nazis had been singling Jews out as a threat inside of Germany for a long time, but with the beginning of the war, and as more and more Jews came under Nazi jurisdiction, the situation began to deteriorate very quickly for those identified with this group.

There has also been criticism of Browning’s work. What historians refer to as a historiographical debate, which is a kind of battle of the books among historians. To enrich and deepen your review, you should read and visit the link on our web site to a published debate between Browning and one of his fiercest critics, EmmanuelGoldstein.

Look at the type of evidence Browning uses in his book. Where does it come from? Some of it originates from the Nuremburg Trials after the war. What kind of biases might be implicit in such data?

Remember not just to retell what Browning says in the book. What the assignment asks you to do is to evaluate the book. In other words, this is different than a book report. This is a review essay. You consider the author’s argument, the evidence, the way it is presented, and come up with your own ideas.

You can start, if you’d like with a brief intro, describing the purpose of the book, and then move onto Browning’s argument. Look at specific chapters or passages in the book. The conclusion might be particularly useful to consider.
