How Post Pandemic Changes in Hotel Housekeeping is Affecting the Housekeeping Department
The coronavirus pandemic is a big business setback for the hospitality sector around the world. The new way of doing things is of major concern to hoteliers. Seventy-eight percent of hotel guests found hygiene to be the most critical aspect shaping their decision of where to stay before the coronavirus pandemic (Crowther, n.d.).
Hotels have resulted in various methods to cope with these changes like, developing a structured cleaning routine that uses industry standards, adjusting guest rooms and cleaning routines depending on need (Crowther, n.d.). Furthermore, housekeeping departments track the number of hours guest rooms are unoccupied and decide rooms that are poorly maintained and why. Finally, some hotels have used automation to increase efficiency.
The housekeeping department has been affected in different ways. Because of increased guestroom cleaning hours, estimating service and labor demands can become more difficult (“SAFE STAY | AHLA,” n.d.). Lack of preparedness for extra time will also put a burden on personnel, and last-minute changes to departure room scheduling can affect room availability.

There is the disinfection of public areas. They are handled with hospital-grade disinfectants and washed on a more regular basis. Marriott also expanded its detailed cleaning measures in the rooms. The Hotel leveraged technology to reduce inter-person contact with mobile and web check-in.
A mobile key would be provided to allow checking to the rooms without stopping at the desk. The Marriott Hotel procedures are satisfactory from an executive housekeeper’s view; the use of technology by the hotel is commendable. Another solution that can be implemented at Marriott hotel is the use of other automation tools to leverage the use of other automation tools to enhance productivity, for example, automated dashboards and reporting tools.
