In this activity, you will write a prospectus for your proposal. A prospectus is a preliminary description of the topic and a plan for conducting research for a project. Length: 1 page minimum, 2 page maximum Format: 12-pt Times New Roman or 11-pt Calibri font, double spaced, 1” margins, name and date, paginated, doc/.docx/.rtf file type Follow these instructions precisely and include the same three headings in your prospectus: Problem. State the problem in a single sentence. Significance. Explain why the problem needs to be solved–why it is an important issue. Specifically, who is affected by the problem, in what way(s) are they affected, and what are the consequences (intended and unintended) if the issue is left unaddressed? Solution. Discuss at least two possible solutions. One of these may be the solution you end up proposing in your final paper. However, it’s also possible and acceptable if after researching recent scholarly sources on your topic, you settle on a solution that hasn’t occurred to you yet.

Requirements: 1 page minimum

Use this guide to 1) help you clarify your ideas and 2) prepare your proposal.

  1. What are some problems that you recognize in your immediate environment? For example, instead of “childhood obesity”, you know that children at your local public school are only provided heavily-processed foods, so the few fruits and vegetables they get are either covered in sugar or salt. Or maybe you notice that your town (or area of town) has terrible traffic congestion. These are problems that are in the scope of your ability to enact real change. List as many problems as you can – can you list five?

  1. From your list, choose 1-3 that interest you and fill out the chart below with as much information as possible.
Possible causes Possible solutions Solutions that have already been tried
Problem 1:

Problem 2:

Problem 3:

  1. From the chart above, determine which problem you want to propose a solution for.

Of the possible solutions, which ones are most feasible? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Who would you propose these changes to? (A city council, school board, a specific person, the community at large, etc.)? Who else would be interested in your proposed solution, who has a stake in it?

  1. Now, state the problem in one sentence. Explain its significance (why is it important?). Provide two solutions. (Use this response to write your Prospectus.)

  1. What authoritative sources can you use to help support your argument that this is a problem, it is significant, and the solution can work? (If you haven’t done any library research yet, go ahead and list the kinds of information you will need to support your claims.)

  1. Once you have gathered sources, fill out the chart below with source information. You need at least five sources:
Summary Does this source support problem, significance, or solution? Information from source that pertains to your argument (include page #s)
Source 1
Source 2 (keep adding rows for each of your sources)

(At this point, you should be ready to write your Problem Statement.)

  1. Once you have your solution determined, write the steps (or a flow chart or causal chain) for implementing it.

  1. Back to your audience, who has a stake in this proposed solution, and what concerns will they have–financial, time, feasibility, etc.? How will you address each of those concerns?

(At this point, you should be ready to write your Solution.)

(Use the work you’ve done on the Prospectus, Problem Statement, and Solution to compile and write your entire Proposal.)
