Definition of Democracy
There is no utopia in this reality. Democracy is probably the most important system of government in today’s society. Recently, people have different perspectives on how the society should work, and people tend to maximize their benefit at the cost of others’ lives. This kind of exercise may lead to despotism, which means the exercise of absolute power. According to the Cambridge dictionary, democracy is defined as “the belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected representatives or directly by the people themselves” (“Democracy”). A famous ancient history website named History, delineates that democracy lays its foundation in ancient Greece as Demokratia which means “rule by the people.” Democracy is important because it has significant impacts on the lives of people today. Its essence derives from our human nature to pursue equality or independence or freedom. It is important for ourselves not to become negligent in our fundamental rights that our ancestors have strived to obtain: the right to vote, the right to liberty, and the right to property. Therefore, democracy means the fundamental right of people.
First, the idea of democracy is definitely related to independence. The fundamental rights of people originate from independence of acting. However, some people put clear distinction between independence and freedom. The Past, Present and Future of Democracy by Raymond Duncan Gastil (1985) use the term “independence” differently from “freedom,” when freedom is just a larger concept beyond independence. The author argues that the definition of democracy in the past and in the present is different and needs to be treated differently with new behavior. Raymond also states that,
Democracy is seen in the Survey as the institutional form of freedom in the modern world, with “freedom” defined essentially as internal political freedom and its necessary context. Although independence is less often confused with democracy than it is with freedom, it is still important to make clear the relative unimportance of independence for the achievement of democracy.
This statement fails to consider one critical aspect. A large chunk of populace still thinks that the independence can interchangeably mean freedom. To provide an example with a logical sense, a person can go ride a bike independently with the freedom of going outside. According to the reference, the author is just trying to approach the readers with his or her own difficult knowledge. Making a boundary between the meaning of freedom and independence only makes our interpretation of democracy even more ambiguous and esoteric. Therefore, it is inarguable that democracy is the independence of people.
Secondly, government should run for its people, and the leader should disclose to its people. There is a notable case in which citizen of a nation changed destiny of the nation to the correct path. Around two years back, it was revealed that the South Korea’s woman president named Park Geun Hae deceived the citizens with her friend. She was a president who got elected by the majority of people, but after the shocking disclosure of her acts, people turned away from her. Her regime was totally devoid of democracy. If she had truly realized that it is the people who voted her a president, she would not have gotten to this point. It is evident during her regime that she turned away from democracy and pursued her own benefit. When the sinking of MV Sewol happened, people had questions regarding her presidential agenda as nothing has been carried out to prevent the drowning of 295 people, including 250 high school students full of dreams. The president did not talk about it, and her whereabouts during that time are still unresolved. It had been proven that a leader who loses the meaning of democracy cannot last long and will be impeached by the people. The image of candlelight protest in Gwang Hwa Moon road was our voice for ideal democracy. Later, verdicts of Constitution impeached the president and put her into jail for her wrongdoings. We have the right to know, and if the right is violated, we hold right to bring about changes in the society by any mean but abiding by the constitution of our democracy.
Lastly, democracy is the right of people because it allows them access to our important needs. It is irrefutable to say that democracy enhances public health status. It would also be impossible to make money through my ways of mean. An article by John Dryzek (2016),
Similarly, for Sen (2009) the capacity to participate effectively in public discussion—at the heart of his idea that democracy’s universal aspect involves the exercise of public reason—is a truly fundamental capability that enables societies to deliberate the more specific capabilities (such as bodily integrity, health, self-respect) that societies should secure.
This statement certainly endorses the argument that democracy is the fundamental rights of people. As addressed above, government should reinforce the specific capabilities because without these, a nation is no longer democratic. The system of taxation is as old as late human civilization. If denizens of a society contribute their part of labor to it, in order for a nation to obtain democracy, the nation should proper with idea based on the citizens. The definition of democracy is again emphasized as “ruled by the people.”
It is clearly supported from the content above that democracy is the fundamental rights of people for various reasons. The first contention is that democracy is related to independence. The second point is based on examples of what if definition of democracy is so corrupted, and last assertion is that democracy grants us with access to our important needs. Therefore, nothing in my mind regarding the topic overweighs the ideas stated above.
