The UN Sustainable Development Goals represent seventeen targets that seek to revolutionize the member states towards achieving better living standards and health for their member states. The united nation believes that when all its member states work to accomplish these goals, it will lead to improved living standards for all humanity globally and improve access and the standards of health service in the world, thereby guaranteeing each individual a healthy life (United Nations, 2021). Although the UN nations seek to make the Sustainable Development Goals relevant to all its member states, it is essential to note that some goals are more relevant to specific countries than others. For example, the level of efforts required to eradicate poverty in all its forms in the United States will not be the same effort needed in Zimbabwe in Africa. Therefore, in the article, we will discuss which one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals is relevantly applicable in addressing the global burden of disease in Somalia and discuss how achieving the particular goal in Somalia will impact the global society living in the country.
Somalia is a UN member state and a country in Africa that has not been peaceful for many years. The country does not currently have a stable government, and for many years, people have been suffering from hunger, lack of quality education, health, and poor living standards. All the UN Sustainable development Goals are heavily applicable in this country. However, I feel that Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, the 16th SDG, is currently the most relevant in the country. The biggest hindrance to better living standards in that country is not just war. Still, other factors such as corruption, tribalism, social inequalities such as lack of education for ladies and early marriages play a significant role in the current situation in that country. Therefore, ensuring that people are peacefully coexisting and that justice is guaranteed for every individual in the country is the first step to reducing the global burden on diseases. Building capacity and developing strong institutions will continue ensuring social justice and prevent the government from slipping back to the dark times.
Furthermore, Strong institutions will prevent anarchy and promote accountability, ensuring that the government invests in its people’s health and better living standards. Achieving peace, justice, and strong institutions in Somalia will also ease the burden of developed countries and their neighbors spending on preventing wars in the regions. It will also ensure that every global citizen visiting Somalia will be guaranteed their safety and access to better living amenities.
