Sometimes, your work in software quality analysis will involve hypotheses that only test a single population. You will often encounter problems that involve two populations, however; in this case, the hypothesis testing procedure becomes a little more complicated, but you can still apply the same general approach that you use for a single population. But what about cases in which the hypothesis under test involves several (more than two) populations? For instance, a software engineer might be interested in determining whether there is any variation in the mean number of bugs in several different software routines. To perform hypothesis testing of multiple means, you would require a more sophisticated approach, such as analysis of variance.
Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a statistical method that is often regarded as an extension of two-sample hypothesis testing. For each of the most common ANOVA methods, under what conditions can that method be successfully applied? What strengths or weaknesses do you see in the overall ANOVA approach?
