Journal 1/Project 1 – Profile
Project Part 1: Profile the company you’re working for, including mission or vision statement, business format and a brief statement regarding their history in the area and current company leadership.
Journal 1:  Write about your first week’s experiences on the job.  Include orientation, staff introductions, tour of property, HR experiences, trainings and other relevant details.

Journal 2/Project Part 2 – Five Professional Goals
Project Part 2: Focus on the five professional goals you chose with your supervisor and include your motivation for choosing each one.  Address each goal specifically.  Include details about why you chose each one, how you plan to accomplish them and who will most likely mentor you in each area.
Journal 2: Consider your goals and reflect on how they might be applied within the organization. Include coworker and supervisor impact, related products and services, history and background as well as environmental influences.

Journal 3/Project Part 3 – Job Descriptions
Project Part 3: Focus on your job description and include a copy here.  Some began externships with specific job descriptions and others did not.  Working without a job description is extremely challenging for obvious reasons and learning to write an effective one will be one of your most valued skills as a manager or business owner. If you have a formal job description, include a copy of it.   If not, write one using the categories in the linked article as a guide.

Journal 3: Describe the actual experiences that are defining your current job. Do they flow from your specific job description or are they redefined on a daily basis? How does the daily environment affect your assigned responsibilities? Is your current environment structured and organized or is it defined by random influences?

Journal 4/Project Part 4 – Tools of the Trade
Project Part 4:  You will utilize many different types of visual tools on a daily basis regardless of your type of employment.  For this segment, submit samples of at least five different visual items you use in your daily job.  These can include management checklists, trip advisor reports, social media examples, sales reports, arrivals lists, event summaries, sales letters, occupancy reports, press releases, equipment/catering lists, etc.  Copy and paste neatly into this document, label and describe its use.
Journal 4: Based on the examples shared above, share reflections about your successes and disappointments in applying these tools. What are your ideas for improvement? Are there implications for leadership or human resources? What are you learning that you plan to take advantage of in future?

Journal 5/Project Part 5 – Group Discussion – Financial Planning
Project Part 5:
Reference the financial planning discussion forum. Read the assigned article addressing the importance of financial planning and post comments describing your own efforts in this area.  If you haven’t begun this planning process, post your thoughts about future financial goals and how you expect outcomes to define your future.  You’re required to read all posts and reply to at least one other in order to receive full credit.
Journal 5: Freestyle. Include relevant topics based on your current issues.

Journal 6/Project Part 6 – Goals Accomplishment & Future Projections
Project Part 6:
For each goal, write a reflective paragraph addressing how you completed the goal, or explain why you feel that you didn’t achieve the goal as you’d planned.  If you replaced some of your original goals with new ones, write about the new goals.
Journal 6: Freestyle. Include relevant topics based on your current issues.

Journal 7/Project Part 7 – Goals Accomplishment & Future Projections
Project Part 7 – Management Exit Questionnaire:
The exit questionnaire is an important component asking you to provide information that will be helpful as we plan future academic experiences.  Type your responses directly on the questionnaire found in the assignment dropbox, save and upload it there, separate from this document.  All responses will be compiled in one document and shared with Dean Saboe and the hospitality faculty team prior to our final exit meeting.
Journal 7:
Share your thoughts about any aspect of the externship experience as related to your future goals and professional endeavors in the hospitality and tourism field.  Include job prospects, new businesses you might create, relocation interests and further educational plans.
