Part A: Applying Anthropology to a Contemporary Challenge (20 points)
Applied  anthropology is the application of anthropological theory, research  methods, and knowledge to addressing contemporary global challenges. For  the first part of your final project, I would like you select a  challenge facing people in the world today. You can identify such as  challenge in two main ways, as described below. You will then do some  research online and/or in the library to investigate the challenge as  well how anthropologists and/or anthropological ideas, knowledge, and  research methods have been involved in trying to understand and address  this challenge. You will also get to propose how you think  anthropological perspectives could be utilized in work on this issue.  Also, think about what ethical challenges might come up for an  anthropologist or anyone trying to approach this issue from a culturally  aware perspective.
1. Selecting & Researching Your Individual Case Study of a Contemporary Challenge
You can use ONE of two main approaches to selecting your challenge, Approach A OR Approach B:
A)  Identify a contemporary challenge facing the nation or globe and how  anthropology as a field and the concept of culture might assist in  better understanding and addressing that challenge. You can pick an  issue that we’ve address in class sessions or in the class readings, an  issue that’s related to your field of study or potential career, or just  something you have an interest in or care about. Some examples include:

§  an example of global challenges (such as those mentioned in Chapter 15 or 4 of text)
§  an environmental change/challenges (drought/water supply, climate change,
deforestation, in a specific area, etc.)
§  emotional and physical health issues and health care (such as specific diseases or
conditions, substance use, depression, malnutrition, etc.)
§  educational policies/issues
§  family policies/issues, including ideas about marriage or child abuse/neglect
§  legal policies/issues and criminal justice issues
§  issues of racial, ethnic or gender-based discrimination
Once  you select an issue and begin to research it, consider a few places in  the world where this might be present to narrow your scope of topic a  bit. As part of identifying a challenge, search for materials about its  connection with anthropology and culture. Do online searches combining  “anthropology and your topic”, “culture and your topic, “applying  anthropology to your topic.” If you need assistance finding some sites  with such links and/or with identifying a topic that is not too broad  but not too narrow, then please let me know and I’m happy to assist.  Find 2-3  high quality online or library resources to describe the  problem/challenge you picked, where people are experiencing it., AND how  anthropologists or anthropology is involved in the issue.

B)  Identify a contemporary culture or subculture whose members are facing  challenges to their cultural survival and possibly their physical  survival. You can think about the cultures and subcultures we’ve learned  about during the semester or a group you’ve previously learned about.  Then, you will research some basic information about this cultural group  and the specific challenges they are facing to their physical or  cultural survival. You can also look at the following websites for  ideas:
§ www.nationalgeographic.com§ www.culturalsurvival.org
§ www.survivalinternational.org§ www.firstpeoples.org
§ www.who.int/topics/health_services_indigenous/en/
Find 2-3 high quality online or library resources to describe the cultural group you selected, the
challenges they are facing, and how anthropologists or anthropology are involved.
NOTE: As part of Reading Reflection #4, you will be asked to identify the challenge you’re proposing as your case study and the 2-3  resources that you’ve found. At that point, I will let you know if I  think you need to find different or additional resources. Students may  not utilize identical sources/cases, nor can you select the exact same  options as those we’ll cover in class. You need to have your sources  OKed.
2. Examining How Anthropologists/Anthropology Can Be Involved in Understanding & Addressing the Challenge
In  your research, you should have looked to see if you can find evidence  of ways in which anthropologists or the field of anthropology (its  research methods, its terms/ideas, its collection of knowledge, etc.)  have been utilized in understanding and/or addressing your case study.  This can include anthropology in general as well as any 1 or more of the  subfields within anthropology (biological anthropology, cultural  anthropology, linguistic anthropology, archaeology). In addition,  reflect on what YOU think anthropology could contribute to better  understanding and solving the challenges based on what you have learned  this semester. Regardless of whether you found evidence of  anthropological involvement thus far, you will need to propose your  recommendations of what anthropology can contribute to addressing this  challenge.
3. Writing Your Individual Case Study Report
Write a 3 to 3 1/2  page summary of your research and reflections (double spaced, 11-12  font, 1 inch margins). It should include a list of sources, as well as  the following components Once you have gathered information and  reflection on the possible role of anthropologists and/or  anthropological ideas and methods (including from any of the  branches/fields of anthropology), please write up the following. (Double  spaced pages, 11-2 font)
I. Description of Challenges (about 1⁄2-1 page)
§ What is the challenge you selected for your case study (basic facts—scope, location,
explanation)  or what is the cultural group or subculture (basic facts: population,  location, way of life) and its current challenges?
II. Role of Anthropology and Anthropologists (1-1 1⁄2 pages)

§  How are anthropologists and/or anthropological ideas/methods currently applied in
understanding and addressing your case study challenge (if you are able to discover this—let
me know if you need help here)?
§  In your opinion, how could anthropological ideas and methods be utilized to better
understand and address this challenge? What thoughts do you have about how the concept of2

culture and the knowledge & methods from any of anthropology’s subfields be applied in this case?
III. Ethical Considerations (about 1⁄2 page)
§ In your opinion, what might be some of the ethical challenges regarding figuring out whether
anthropologists  as individuals or anthropology as a field should be involved in better  understanding or in trying to solve this challenge?
IV. Citing Sources
Cite  your sources using your preferred format. Include references in the  text (in parentheses) and in a reference list at the end.
4. OPTIONAL—Sharing Your Case Study with the Class
If  you would like additional extra credit points toward your participation  grade (2 max), you have the choice of sharing your case study and how  you think anthropology could help in addressing it with the class in a  brief 2-3  minute summary on the last day of class. You could do so through a  short verbal summary of your challenge and how anthropology could help  in addressing it. If you would like to bring a slide or two, a photo, or  artifact to illustrate your case, let me know but that is not required.  You will need to notify me by May 1st if you would like to share your  case study.
Part B: Applying Lessons of In-Class Case Study on Global Refugee Challenges (10 points)
Questions for Reflection Essay: Applications of Anthropology in relation to Case Study—Hmong Refugee Families in the US
In  the last 2 weeks of the semester, we will be examining a case study of  global refugee experiences. The materials to be reviewed in class that  are an important part of your final paper. You will need to be present  for the film as it is not readily available elsewhere.
Reflect on  the stories of the refugee experience we reviewed in class, particularly  the examples of the Hmong families we learned about in class  discussion, films, lecture. You can cite these sources in the way your  write (eg: “In the film, The Split Horn,…,”). Answer the following  questions in 2-3 pages:
1. Using 2 specific examples from the film  and class materials, what lessons did you learn from studying and  discussing the experience of Hmong refugees in the US?
2. How do  you think you could apply these lessons in your own life—in your current  or future work, in your family, and/or in your daily interactions with  people, etc.?
3. Think of the stories about the Hmong & other  refugees, along with additional stories shared in class through reading,  lecture and class discussions. Do you think that ethnographic and  cross-cultural stories have the power to create change? Why or why not,  and how or how not?
Grading Criteria (total 30 points)

§  addresses all of components identified above, with research and specific examples to back up your points
§  properly identifies sources of information (get sources OKed first)
§  utilizes polished writing that presents information clearly and effectively
§  demonstrates thoughtfulness regarding concepts and cases analyzed
