Research Project Essay

Due Date: In Moodle and Turnitin on April 14 no later than 11:59 PM

This research project essay is an abbreviated “ Review” or an abbreviated “Review of the ” of some sort. You have written your critical analysis essay on one of the stories below during which time I instructed you not to quote directly from anything outside of the story. This project is now asking you to find out what others have said about the story you have analyzed. To do this, first identify and read three different articles each with a different interpretation of what you have written on. With these interpretations and yours, you have four interpretations of the same story. Now, write a six-paragraph essay complete with an introduction, a four-body paragraph, and a conclusion as follows:

1. Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”
2. Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado”
3. Zora Neale Hurston’s “Sweat”
4. Charles W. Chesnutt’s “The Passing of Grandison”
5. O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi”
6. Chinua Achebe’s “Dead Men’s Path’
7. Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace”
8. Kate Chopin’s “Desiree’s Baby”

I. Title: The first ten words of everyone’s title must be the same, but the other words that follow will vary according to the name of the author and title of your chosen story. For example:

A Research Project: An Abbreviated Review of the on Zora Neal Hurston’s “The Gilded Six Bits”

II. In your introduction, clearly indicate the purpose of this project (e.g.: The purpose of this essay is to share different interpretations of Zora Neale Hurston’s “The Gilded Six-Bits”). Thereafter, state the full names of the authors whose interpretations are the target of this essay in separate sentences, including yours, but do not write the title of the articles. After each article’s author’s name, in a different sentence, state what the author’s subject of the story is.

III. In each of your four body paragraphs (one for each author you mentioned in your introduction), without directly quoting, report by summarizing that author’s interpretation starting by stating the authors thematic (thesis) statement. Follow this with a detailed explanation of how the author supported her claim. Note, again, you must not quote directly from the article except in the case of a word or phrase (two or three words) from each author’s article. The last of these body paragraphs will be about you reporting on your own interpretation in your critical analysis. For those of you who did not submit your critical analysis essay, you can still write your report but not as the critical analysis essay. Rather, you first on your own criticize the story and then report.

IV. In your conclusion, indicate what this project tells you about the interpretations of literary works. As you might have noted by the time you write your conclusion, all four interpretations are different from one another, but each interpretation is just as valid as the others. Thus, after stating what this project tells you, advise other readers who are hesitant about airing their opinions about a literary work.
