Africana American Intellectual HistoryAFS 331

Africana American Intellectual HistoryAFS 331

Satisfies AFS outcomes #1 and at least two of the remaining four learning outcomes.

Produce 2 ‘long-form blog-style articles (1500-1600 words each) that could be considered for submission to one or more of the websites that were discussed during the individual presentations this semester. Reviewing their standards for submission can provide additional guidance.

Your essay should be on a subject or person distinct from the website presentations by AFS 331 students and should be distinct from the subject of the paper you did for the IQ2  debate.

Your papers can either focus on a person, group (e.g., the Black Panthers) and explain why they are a black intellectual, or it can focus on a specific issue about which black intellectuals have talked, sang, written or addressed in some other format. One of the essays should identify someone for whom you can make an argument is a Black Vernacular Intellectual.

Both your essays should clearly contribute toward intellectual history, rather than a history of ideas.

Your tasks:

1) Have an argument.

☛ Your argument/subject should connect to at least of the readings from this semester’s course.

2) I should be able to access your sources, whether it’s a book in the library or an online source.

3) For each essay, employ at least 2 scholarly sources. These sources should clearly be used as support for your argument. Support means that your essay demonstrates comprehension of that source’s argument and how it connects conceptually with your own argument. In contrast, a cursory mention that points to a happenstance connection is not supported. For example, if you were to write an essay focusing on Ida B. Wells, and you reference a scholarly source that states Ida B. Wells was an early Black feminist—but don’t use the concepts or argument of that scholarly source beyond that biographical tidbit—this reference would not count as one of the minimum 2 scholarly sources your essay must use.

4) One of the essays must be appropriate for the discipline of history. That means:

☛ This essay should use at least 2 primary historical sources. One source maybe from course materials this semester. The other(s) should reflect new research on your part.

☛ The two scholarly sources for this essay should be historians. One source may be from course materials this semester. The other(s) should reflect new research on your part.

☛ This essay can incorporate scholarly sources from other disciplines if you wish.

☛ You may certainly connect to a current issue—but the focus of analysis should be historical in nature. For example, if an essay focuses on the experience of black South African women in higher education, the time period should be ‘historical’, and not an essay whose main analytical focus was on the experiences of black South African women in higher ed today. For this essay, I’m defining ‘historical’ as a pre-21st century. If the subject you’d like to research and write on extends into the 21st century, you should discuss it with me via email or zoom before you begin your research.

5) The 2nd essay can also be historical in nature but does not have to be. If it is not, it should still consider context, as we’ve discussed in class throughout the semester.

☛ At least one scholarly source for this essay must be from a discipline other than history.

6) In addition to learning outcome #1, each essay should address at least two of the other learning outcomes for the Africana Studies major or minor.

7) Each essay should have a cover page that includes:

  • Your name
  • Title of the essay
  • Learning outcomes demonstrated in the essay (from the link above)

8) One of your blog-style essays must have a focus on an individual who is not from and trained within the United States or an issue that is not primarily an ‘American’ issue. In short, a focus outside of the United States.

9) Embed hyperlinks to relevant material, sources, videos, images, etc., as the blogs on these websites do. However, don’t go overboard and make every other sentence a hyperlink; one or two links per page should be your maximum. Each blog should have a minimum of two hyperlinks.

10) Cite your sources. You can use either an MLA-type format (parenthetical) or footnotes/endnotes. In either case, you must have a bibliography or works cited page. Check the library webpage’s Citation Guide for appropriate formatting.

***Warning***: Don’t be fooled into thinking this is easy because of the relatively short length of the final project. Blogs for these websites are often between 1000-1800 words, which is about 3-6 pages. However, they are works of quality scholarship—a good deal of research, work, and editing went into producing them. I suspect most of them were initially a good deal longer, and that they were pared down considerably by their authors and editors.

Your goal: be a public intellectual by producing something that you could actually send in and would have a shot at getting published…after all, how cool would it be to get something published, as an undergraduate, on one of these well-regarded websites?

Post your papers in the Finals folder on Moodle in the same manner as you’ve done for other assignments.

The grade for your final project rests on the following components:

  1. Argument and use of evidence to support that argument. For example, if you select to write about someone as a BVI, why is the person(s) you analyze an intellectual? What was their impact? What’s your grasp of the contexts within which their intellectual product took shape? Similarly, if you choose to focus on a particular issue, why does this issue matter? How has it impacted the lives of people of African descent? What’s the context and how have Black intellectuals been involved?
  2. Quality of writing. Proofread. Don’t let small grammatical errors and typos obscure the expression of your thinking. Essentially the same as the review essays you have been writing all semester. This is obviously the key part of your final project.
  3. Meeting the criteria described above under ‘Your tasks.’
  4. Hyperlinks must function properly.
