Summary of strengths:

During this course, I realized that one of my greatest strengths is working collaboratively and communicating with clients effectively. Collaboration helps in creating better documentation as there is a piece of more comprehensive and accurate information. This, in turn, helps in offering the best services to the patients because there is a good flow of information from one health professional to the other. Collaboration also increases the scope of ideas about what the patients want as there are more questions and suggestions from the various professionals. Developing therapeutic communication skills is one of the most critical aspects of this environment. I realized that one of the most important ways that a nurse can help a patient is through developing a relationship that is open and based on trust (Price, & Reichert, 2017). In many cases, health professionals forget that even small conversations can change the patient’s day and impact their overall recovery process. I had a chance to focus on essential skills in communication and developing significant relationships.
This was a meaningful experience that helped me interact with patients instead of theoretical descriptions in books.
Another sign that I am capable of effectively carrying out a comprehensive assessment. This is critical because it helps nurses in crucial mining information regarding the patient’s health by observing the patient’s self-reported symptoms and measuring the patient’s vital signs (Krautter,et al., 2017). I was also capable of coming up with SMART goals to help diagnose and treat the patient effectively. This involved coming up with a list of things that I have to accomplish and ensuring that I meet my set goals.

Opportunities for growth:

One of the major areas that I found I need to do more is diagnostic tests, mental status examinations, and physical examinations. These areas are very complex that require a lot of skills and expertise. When it comes to narrowing down to differential diagnosis, I need to learn how to settle to the best differential diagnosis and narrow it down to the correct diagnosis. This is primarily because psychological disorders are diagnosed using diagnostic tests, but they are dependent on the clinician’s assessment. I also have to work on my ability to perform and interpreting mental status examinations. This will be very important and will help me in improving my knowledge and skill mix.

Now, writethree to four (3–4)possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMARTStrategy, as described in the Learning Resources.

1. Goal: by week four, to improve my skills in performing patient’s comprehensive assessment
a. Objective: conducting mental comprehensive assessment
b. Objective: identification of the correct psychological diagnosis
c. Objective: being able to efficiently interpret mental health information

2. Goal: by the end of the practicum, be conduct a comprehensive psychiatric assessment
a. Objective: be able to apply advanced techniques in carrying out a comprehensive patient assessment
b. Objective: being able to utilize advanced knowledge in understanding various psychiatric screening tools

c. Objective: being able to demonstrate advanced techniques in psychiatric screening

3. Goal: by week 4, be able to develop good diagnostic reasoning skills such as selecting appropriate differential diagnosis.

a. Objective: use of physical assessment and laboratory tests to narrow down to the right diagnosis
b. Objective: demonstrate advanced skills in making the priority of the best diagnosis
c. Objective: the use of lab tests and physical assessment efficiently
