Critical Review of
Due: Friday, April 16 at 11:59 pm
PURPOSE
This assignment is meant to enhance students’ understanding of gender and how it impacts socialization,
social structures, and inequality in the United States. Summarizing research and comparing and contrasting course materials
are main components of this project.
INSTRUCTIONS
You are required to do a critical review of literature in sociology of gender. This is an opportunity for you to summarize and
critically analyze four assigned readings or videos on a single topic. It is not meant to summarize all the literature in the course.
You choose the topic and readings. Critically analyze means you carefully choose a topic, sources, and compare and contrast
them. It does not mean you criticize the sources.
Style of Writing: Academic. You are required to use in-text citations and include a reference page.
It is worth 30 percent of your grade. Here is the grading rubric for you to download and read.
In the assignment you should: 1) summarize the topic in 250 words or more, 2) state its importance in your thesis statement
and bold your thesis statement; 3) provide at least three statistics related to the topic; 4) explain the arguments from readings or
videos; and 5) compare and contrast the readings and videos. This is also how your assignment should be organized. This
assignment should be your original thought and writing. You can use writing from discussion posts, but the writing needs to be
revised to be considered academic writing. This means it should include in text citation phrases.
Format: You can choose the format of the project. These are the options.
1. A four to five-page paper, excluding reference page.
2. Video (7 minutes)
3. PowerPoint with voice over lasting 7 minutes.
Paper format
1. Use 12-point font, Times New Roman, with 1-inch margins and upload it to Canvas as a Word document (.docx), Rich text
format (.rtf), or Adobe document (pdf).
2. Page numbers should be at the bottom of each page.
3. It should be double-spaced.
4. It should be 1000 words minimum, which is approximately 4 to 5 pages, excluding a reference page.
5. Bold the first in-text citation from your sources. Also bold your thesis statement.
6. These citations can be in any citation style (Chicago, MLA, etc.).
PowerPoint Format:
1. The length of the presentation should be 7 minutes and include slides with in-text citations from your sources. All five
sources need to be referenced and complete citations for each source must be on a slide.
2. Your thesis statement should be listed on a slide titled “Thesis Statement.”
3. Your discussion should be at least 7 minutes. If you use a video clip, it will not count towards your 7 minute minimum. If
using a video clip from a movie or other sources, it should be less than 30 seconds.
4. Bold the first in-text citation from your sources. Also bold your thesis statement.
5. These citations can be in any citation style (Chicago, MLA, etc.).

Be careful not to confuse your own opinions with sociological explanation. You should not make value statements in substitution
for scientific arguments. Value statements include opinions, generalizations about human nature, or prescriptive statements
(Women should…, Men should…). Discussion of “bad role models” should be replaced with what you mean by bad for example.
The writing should be analytical and scientific, not persuasive and opinionated.
