Demographic characteristics affect communities in Canada

Unit 3 description (Managing our resources and industries) Students identify Canadas natural resources and industries, where they are located and why, and investigate how we use these resources in a variety of ways. The focus now shifts to economic and environmental sustainability of our resources. Students explore several resource management issues related to the forestry, fishing and energy sectors and identify how and why different stakeholders have differing values and views on these resource issues. The goal is to have students identify how certain industries in Canada impact the environment and how their own lifestyles impact the environment. The unit concludes with students identifying and exploring a variety of alternative approaches to resource development and management as a way of working towards developing a more sustainable society. Framing Questions: What roles do various industries play in your community? Which of Canadas natural resources do you think has the most important uses? Why is it crucial that we care about and sustain our natural resources? How can you change your way of living to reduce your consumption of resources? How do we balance our needs and wants with sustainable resource development? What criteria should we set for the extraction and development of Canadas natural resources? Which resources and industries would you consider to be most valuable to Canada? Unit 4 description (human geography) Students study Canadas diverse human geography and connect population patterns and trends to its physical geography. They explore the various national and global processes and phenomena that contribute to making our country such a multicultural nation. Students begin by learning about the demographic factors that change population patterns and trends followed by investigations into certain issues affecting segments of the population. Students compare Canadas demographics and issues to those in other parts of the world and identify and evaluate how Canada responds to and is impacted by those issues. The baby boomers, Aboriginal peoples, and new immigrants serve as the case study foci for the unit. The settlement and distribution patterns of all of these communities will be mapped and analyzed so students have a clear understanding of the various national and international factors that shape our population patterns in Canada. Framing Questions: How might Canadas response to global population issues affect Canadian communities? How do Canadians assist in addressing global issues? What criteria should be used to determine Canadian immigration policy? In what ways do demographic characteristics affect communities in Canada?
