When you walk into a restaurant or a store, you often get a “feel” for the environment.  It may feel warm, comfortable, and inviting or it may seem too loud, too bright, and overwhelming.  The same is true of the learning environments we create for children.  In Chapter 6, Bullard discusses such important design considerations as color, lighting, walls, and floors.  For this discussion, watch the two videos, Color and The Floor as Furniture, featured here:  BASICspaces: Designing infant and toddler environments.  Discuss:
 

Color:  Describe the changes in the use of color at the Little Blessings childcare center.  Do you agree with the rationale behind these changes?  Why or why not?  How do you think these changes will affect the children’s experiences in their new classroom?
The Floor as Furniture:  Describe the changes in the flooring at the Little Blessings childcare center.  Do you agree with the rationale behind these changes?  Why or why not?  How do you think these changes will affect the children’s experiences in their new classroom?
Choose a design consideration from Chapter 6 (other than color or flooring) and describe a “before and after” scenario similar to the ones from the videos.  What does the learning environment look like when this design consideration is not taken into account?  What does it look like after?
