Instructions:
-The number of words to “aim for” should be treated as a very rough guide. Some write excellent shorter essays. Others write excellent longer essays. You may be tempted to write longer essays, but show your understanding of a subject also by knowing what to exclude as less important.
-All questions require substantial essay answers. Many of the questions are somewhat open-ended, leaving you with more choice how to answer. Show how much you have learned. Good essay answers will do just that. Include relevant detail and examples. Do not waste valuable time and space on sentences that do not add anything substantial to the answer.
-Do not answer narrowly. What does that mean? Here’s an example. Suppose the question is: “what is civic studies?” A narrow answer would be one sentence. Something like: “It is an interdisciplinary discipline aiming to develop ideas helpful to citizens understood as co-creators of their worlds.” A broad answer might begin with this sentence, but then explain each component of that sentence, give some history, contrast with alternative conceptions of citizenship and so on.
-You can use examples from outside the course. The answers should be based on readings and lectures. No outside research expected. No citations necessary.

Discuss critically Nye’s concept of soft power.

Discuss critically the idea of the three faces of power. What does Gaventa add with his Power Cube idea
