1. What impact does a family’s economic status have on the value of education within the family? Interview two families from two different social economic statuses and discuss your findings.

2. Homelessness continues to be a social problem. If you are an urban developer would you include this population in your plans when working on urban growth? Why or why not? Give reasons for your answer with examples.

3. Does the economic status of a person have any bearing on drug use, crime, violence, and sexual behavior? Discuss this with both documented examples and interviews. What would you do to minimize the cause-and-effect factors?

4. What role do you think sociology plays in addressing problems of racial and ethnic inequality? How do prejudice and discrimination reinforce each other?

5. What are some of the negative effects of globalization on the environment? What should be done globally to counteract these effects?

6. Identify one local organization, government agency, or a private agency in your community that assists low-income people. Arrange an interview with someone in the organization’s office and learn as much as you can about the program. How does the organization or agency address poverty through providing direct assistance to people or seeking broader social change? What are its specific goals? How does it measure its success?

7. A disturbing trend in recent decades is the rising proportion of U.S. children living in poverty. Find out which ethnic or racial group is most affected. What factors from your research explain this trend? What can be done to alleviate the problem?

8. Interview two people that represent two different racial or ethnic categories that have migrated to this country. Ask them about the role of culture in their socialization and the differences they see between their cultures and the U.S. culture. Have these differences affected them in any way? Explain.

9. Do you think bad people, or a flawed system causes the mistreatment of elders in care facilities? What alternatives would you suggest would be appropriate to deal with this problem and why do you think they would work?

10. There are different aspects of health. How would you define these different aspects? What policies are in place to address the issues that fall into these various aspects of health? In your discussion, give specific examples.
