Background
Carl Rogers
American psychologist born in 1902.
Played a major role in psychotherapy research, the humanistic approach, and client-centered therapy.
Rogers developed his own theories and he played a significant role in advancements in counseling and psychology that is still used very commonly today.
His person-centered approach and unconditional positive regard approach to counseling focused on personality, human development, and relationships.
Rogers’s works were and still are extremely influential in the world of psychology.

Rationale
Rogers’s theory always stood for factual and effective therapy, focusing on the client as a whole, which was not something that had been previously examined as thoroughly.
In today’s world, we rely on the person-centered and humanistic approach in most healthcare settings.
This is becoming increasingly important with mental illness becoming more prevalent.

Carl Rogers and Person-centered therapy
Rogers developed person-centered therapy to make therapy more effective and show the upmost understanding and acceptance towards the clients (Josefowitz & Myran, 2005).
He is known as the originator of client/person-centered therapy (Joseph, 2020; Maguire, 2019).
Person-centered therapy focuses on empathy, unconditional positive regard, and full acceptance of the client (Josefowitz & Myran, 2005).
This is important because it promotes communication and openness to let the client think and feel freely without fear of judgement (Josefowitz & Myran, 2005).

The humanistic approach to therapy
The humanistic approach to counseling and psychology is a holistic approach that looks at the entire person and their experiences in life.
Rogers was an influential person and founding father in developing the humanistic approach (Joseph, 2020; Maguire, 2019).
This approach to psychology is important because it identifies and studies possible causes of human psychological disorder or disfunction (Schimmel, 2008).
This approach sees humans as unique and free-willed in their experiences and motivation (Willmott et. All, 2018).
Rogers emphasized this approach because he believed that love and genuine concern are essential to healthy development (Schimmel, 2008).

Carl Rogers and unconditional positive regard
Rogers created and emphasized unconditional positive regard, which is a therapy technique used commonly today.
Unconditional positive regard is counseling with a nonjudgmental attitude, giving the client nothing but acceptance and empathy (Clark, 2010).
In a counseling setting, unconditional positive regard helps with the client feeling heard, understood, and not judged despite any fear, pain, or negativity the clients expresses (Clark, 2010; Maguire, 2019).
Unconditional positive regard is important because it gives the client freedom to express and accept themselves and their feelings (Maguire, 2019).

Carl Rogers and empathy in counseling
Rogers focused heavily in empathy in his integrative counseling practice (Clark, 2010).
This meant that he had to become fully aware and understanding of the client’s pain and emotional experience (Clark, 2010).
This is important because it allows for the client to feel heard, accepted, and understood (Josefowitz & Myran, 2005).

Conclusion
“The more I can keep a relationship free of judgment and evaluation, the more this will permit the other person to reach the point where he recognizes that the locus of evaluation, the center of responsibility, lies within himself.”
