Engagement of occupational therapy organizations with public policy

Listening skills
On a universal scale, there has been a realization that everyone is willing to talk, but no one is looking to listen. When people are not given an audience or a room to express themselves, they often resort to unconventional behavior in a bid to attract the attention of the people around them. For this reason, people should be predisposed to safe spaces where they could go and be listened to. Such places make it possible for individuals that have any pent-up emotional burdens to ease their tensions and find solutions to their problems in the short and long run (Smallfield & Molitor, 2018). One common reason individuals with psychological problems are not listened to by their family and friends is that they lost their credibility long ago. For example, junkies that are addicted to cocaine may not have anyone to listen to them because they may have stolen from them just to get money to buy drugs. Various psychological schools of thought encourage that therapists should not only listen to clients’ plight but also inform them of the need to listen to the people around them to foster healthy relationships in the short run and long run. Listening skills are important as they permit both the therapist and the client to make sense of and decipher what the other party is saying (Clark & Veal, 2020). When therapists teach clients to listen, they give them insights on how to be more productive. The capacity to listen carefully also gives clients the chance to clearly understand all the assignments that they are given. In the long run, they are able to decipher what the people around them (family, friends, acquaintances) and the society at large expect of them.
Self-help therapy
The essence of self-help therapy is to reveal to emotionally troubled individuals that anything is possible and that they could be in charge of their situation only if they want to. In self-help therapy sessions, what happens is that therapists work hard to convince clients to embrace a stoic approach to life. Stoicism is an ideology that is hinged on only doing things that one is in control of and letting be things that one cannot control. Whenever a client visits a therapist with a problem, the therapist in question hears them out and identifies things that they can do to solve the problem (Jalilova, 2021). The therapist also identifies things that they and the client can do nothing about and make them clear to the client. The end game usually revolves around telling the client to do whatever they can to turn their life around and that they should make peace with whatever it is they cannot change (Rolnick, 2019).
Self-help groups
The idea of self-help groups or support groups is to bring people facing different challenges together to talk. Psychologically, it has become apparent that people become encouraged whenever they are in a forum and hear of other individuals who have bigger problems than them. Self-pity also becomes less pronounced when troubled people in a self-help group heard of instances where others were troubled and became successful. For example, in an Alcoholics Anonymous setting, fully recovered individuals talk to struggling alcoholics just to document to them approaches they can take to better their circumstances. Conversely, as previously mentioned, those troubled with alcohol problems are encouraged to talk just so that their counterparts can be encouraged (Marshall et al., 2021). The importance of self-help groups resonates with showing vulnerable individuals that the solution to their problems is intrinsic and is within their reach. It demonstrates to everyone that their happiness is dependent on them and never external factors. Self-help groups are also important in making better the existing informal support networks among every individual in the community. On a general level, self-help groups help individuals to further their social capital (Mhlmann et al., 2021).
Peer therapy method
Peer therapy methods have a lot of advantages to the counselor, the client, and the community. Clients are accorded the chance to emulate an individual that they have reached out to. Clients are granted the chance to come up with coping skills that presumably work since they work with the peer counseling they are related to. After counseling sessions, it is the hope of peer counselors that they can learn to advocate on their own behalf. When a counselor is an individual who truly understands, they can enhance the feelings of self-worth of the client (Millett & Gooding, 2017). The peer therapy method also helps peer counselors gain feelings of self-worth because every counseling session presents an opportunity to share worthwhile and valuable experiences. Counselors can also be motivated to reach out to other people and to perfect their skills. Overall, for a lot of peer counselors, the peer therapy method can be a chance for career development (Kirsh et al., 2019). Notably, the peer therapy method helps the community have a positive image of emotionally troubled individuals. More importantly, the service to individuals with disabilities is made better permitting these people to assume a more defined role within the community. Peer counseling development would seem to be a grassroots solution to a technology that is growing rapidly, allowing individuals to grow much closer together as opposed to growing further apart (Osman et al., 2020).
In conclusion, listening is a key skill that members of every community should be educated about. In situations where listening skills are in the picture, a lot of negativities is avoided. The aim of therapists should be to ingrain listening skills at the family and community level so that everyone feels that they have a voice (Linder et al., 2017). What is bound to happen later is that even administrators in public offices will develop the courtesy to listen to the people they work with. Listening Without Borders, having identified the challenges that people without a voice go through, have the opportunity to use instruments such as self-help groups, peer therapy method, self-help therapy, and listening skills to change the lives of many people. The organization may face many logistical and monetary challenges, but within the management and operatives must be a heart to help people.
