“Time to retire”

Memorial Day – the unofficial start of summer. John and Linda had been anticipating the time off from work. John is a teacher and Linda is a bank teller. They live in Miami. They had made plans to visit Linda’s mom in Orlando and maybe go to Disney World or Universal Studios during the three-day weekend. On Thursday night, they had packed their bags for a three-day excursion, and as soon as they got off from work on Friday afternoon, they were on the road. It was a trip they had made many times before, but this time it would be different. Sawgrass fires forced I-95 and the Turnpike to shut down for long stretches. They had to get off the main highway and seek alternative routes. With heavier than usual traffic on a holiday weekend, what was normally a four-hour trip extended late into the night. Then the car’s left front tire blew out, and they had to pull over in an unfamiliar town. Both John and Linda’s cell phones were not working…

It was starting to get dark outside, so John and Linda decided to abandon their car where it was and explore the unfamiliar town they were in to ask for help. They spot a gas station near by and started walking towards it. During their walk, Linda started complaining to John about their situation. Annoyed, John started arguing with Linda. As they were walking, a car with a “Just Married” banner passes them by. They were suddenly reminded of the love they have for each other and both John and Linda apologized to each other. They finally reached the gas station and asked the cashier if he knows of any mechanic close by. The cashier helped them contact the shop, informing the couple that the tow truck is on its way to where their car was stranded. They bought snacks before they started heading back to their car. The tow truck arrived around the same time John and Linda did. The driver towed their car and even gave them a lift to the shop. The car needed to stay overnight, so John and Linda checked in the motel next to the shop to sleep in for the night. They woke up a little after sunrise to pick up their now fixed car and continued their road trip to Orlando.
