goals for graduate study and my future career revolve around working in a counseling capacity with adolescents in a school environment. During the counseling program I intend to study with a strong determination to attain the highest grades I am capable of and to learn everything that I can and that will bring me closer to preparation for my chosen profession. I am very dedicated to building a successful school counseling career, and I believe that my graduate studies are the way to do that. I also believe that my past experience is beneficial to what I would like to do with the rest of my life and that it will not only help me with my career but will also help me in my actual studies. In the past, I have worked with eleven- to thirteen-year-old girls in the development of psychology in adolescents. During that time I had the opportunity to speak to them on a personal level and was able to be there to counsel them as well. This real world experience was very important to me and only helped enhance what one learns in the classroom.
A also have an academic background in this area in which I excelled in all of my psychology and education classes, as can be seen by my grades. As a history major with a minor in psychology and a teacher education certification that is near completion, I found my greatest interest in my psychology and education classes. In one of my education classes, I tutored a student in a local middle school. As a tutor, I worked individually with this student in his eighth grade year. I met with the student once a week for an hour each time and helped him prepare for the state test, the ASK. In addition, I brought in different materials to help my student improve in his verbal skills, because this was an area in which he was lacking. At the conclusion of the program, both my student and I did notice great improvement in both his confidence and his verbal skills. He also talked to me on a personal level, and this was probably the most important part of our time together. He explained to me how he was being bullied and that he also had problems with organization. I was then able to provide him with some academic advisement by suggesting ways that he could become better organized and not procrastinate with his work.
A also listened to his problems and suggested ways that he could deal with them more easily. I suggested to him that he practice confidence and speak to the bully verbally, but that he should never use any anger toward that person. At our next meeting he informed me that he did try it and the boy had stopped bullying him. I also had the opportunity to help solve problems for other conflicts. For example, I coached a volleyball team of high school girls for three years. There came a time when I had to be a mediator, and this was really what gave me the idea to become a counselor due to the way I coached and counseled my players. It brought a lot of success to those players, both on and off the court.
As for other information that may be helpful in making your decision, I have found that many children find comfort in me as well as indicate that they are able to trust me with their problems. They also generally follow through with respect to my advice. I have heard their problems regarding school bullying, pressure from their peers, low self-esteem, and countless other issues. A school counselor helps with academic advisement as well, of course, and I myself am very organized and encourage others to be the same. I also encourage good behavior and show children that they can realize their potential. With hard work and determination it is possible to do anything. Growing up in a positive atmosphere is what helps a child to have good self-esteem. As a school counselor, I would love to have each of my students believe in himself or herself and work hard in school because that is how opportunities open up. From my experiences dealing with children, I developed knowledge and an enormous desire to help them on a personal level. To be a school counselor is an obvious choice for me to become a productive member of society, enjoy my work, and benefit others every day.
