Assignment fromThe New Harbrace Guide, Chapter 10:
Whether conscious or unconscious, evaluations are value judgments about whether an object, event, individual, or document meets, exceeds, or does not satisfy the criteria. Every day we evaluate movies, political candidates, academic programs, partners, green designs for new cars or architecture, or issues and objects that affect our daily life. Often you will determine the relevant criteria for your evaluation; other times, the criteria are already in place (symptoms for a specific illness, for example).
As you consider your evaluation, focus on a social phenomenon or work (television show, movie, advertisement, etc.) that merits your attention as well as the attention of your audience. You may want your audience to understand your topic differently from how they currently understand it. Describe your topic and list detailed criteria (either traditional or fresh) for your evaluation, synthesizing your overall evaluation into a thesis statement. Your goal is to help your readers appreciate the significance of your evaluation by aligning the criteria you have developed with the object of your evaluation and the interests of your audience.
EX: Choose a film or television show and write a review of it. Your review should do more than tell readers if the film or show is good or bad, and should do more than summarize the plot or events in the film or show. Consider some of the ways that Manohla Dargis offers a complex reading of a film in her review (by examining themes that it shares with other films, by connecting the main characters to todays audiences, by looking at other work by the same director, by placing it in the context of the other films in the Star Wars series) and develop a thoughtful evaluation of the film or show you choose to review.
For this essay, you will evaluate a social phenomenon or work (movie, music album, advertisement, phenomenon,or political candidate or policy). To evaluate, you will:
Make clear why a particular phenomenon or work needs to be evaluated.Describe the particular phenomenon or work in a way that the rhetorical audience will understand and value.Identify the precise category into which the phenomenon fits: successful movie, effective detergent, dependable computer, easy-to-use smartphone, effective politician). Just consider the ways your doctor evaluates your symptoms before determining your illness.Present the criteria on which the phenomenon or work is to be evaluated clearly, persuasively, authoritatively, and often in an order indicating importance. Criteria can be categorized into three groups: necessary (crucial but not enough to meet your overall assessment), sufficient (meeting all of your minimum standards, including the necessary ones), and accidental (unnecessary but an added bonus to the necessary and sufficient criteria).Include concrete evidence and relevant examples from your personal experience and research to illustrate the ways (usually in the form of assertions) the phenomenon does or does not meet each evaluative criterion. These fair and balanced assertions support the thesis statement.Articulate a clear argument (usually in the form of a thesis statement) about whether or not the object or phenomenon meets the criteria on which it is being evaluated.Demonstrate an ethical approach to the process. You will be incorporating at least three sources for support of your claims and ideas.
