Introduction
Holistic nursing is the practice of healing an individual as a whole person.
Holistic nursing practice is based on the principle that a patient’s psychological, spiritual, and biological aspects are interconnected (Dossey, 2013).
Holistic nurses focus on patient treatment as a whole instead of the traditional symptoms specific treatment.
Holistic nurses focus on the mind, body, emotion, and spiritual approach to nursing, integrating different forms of medicine alongside western medicine

History and Significance of Holistic
The principles of holistic nursing has been integrated with natural remedies and healing therapies since the 1700s.
The use of liniments, ointments, fomentations and teas made from medicinal drugs was a common practice in early nursing.
The nursing curriculum addresses the sociological, relational, physiological, emotional, psychological, and spiritual aspects of human beings and its relation to health (Hanley et al., 2017).
Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing understood the inseparability of the factors named above and recognized them as important in the healing process.

Purpose of Holistic Practice
Holistic nursing practice focuses on the fostering of relationship with patients to promote wellness and healing.
Holistic nursing focuses on the promotion of an individual’s health as a whole.
Holistic nursing practice ensures that patients get quality healthcare.
Holistic nursing also helps in the identification and treatment of an individual by understanding an individual as a ‘whole’ and their environment (Dossey, 2013).

Self-Reflection
Self reflection helps individuals (patient, family, and nurses) to be mindful of themselves within or after certain experiences.
Self reflection enables individuals to identify their strengths and weaknesses and use them as their guide to learning.
Self reflection is an important aspect in a patient’s life since they are able to reflect on their lives as individuals and make decisions to make themselves safe (Dossey, 2013).
Self reflection is important in the development of relationships between patients, their family members, and nurses, which is important for a patient’s healing process.

Self Development
Self development is important in the nursing profession because it is important for career development and growth.
Self development within families is important because it creates a conducive environment where individuals can prosper and maintain healthy lifestyles.
Self development is important in patients because it helps in their healing process.
Self development is important because it ensures the safety and effectiveness of individuals.

Self Care
Self care for nurses is important because it ensures that they provide for their own physical, mental and spiritual well being so that they can do the same for their patients.
Self care is important in family settings especially for caregivers since their health and well being is often translated to children (Dossey, 2013).
Self care is also important for patients because it encourages them to maintain healthy relationships with themselves and others for better healing.

Compassion Fatigue
Compression fatigue is condition characterized by physical and emotional exhaustion causing the lack of ability to feel compassion for others.
The main signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue include chronic emotional and physical exhaustion, increased irritability, and depersonalization (Sinclair et al., 2017).
Compassion fatigue may lead to job dissatisfaction among caregivers leading reduced productivity.
Compassion fatigue may lead to reduced patient outcomes.
Compassion fatigue affects the healing process of patients as a whole therefore negatively impacting the holistic nursing practice.

Compassion Satisfaction
Compassion satisfaction refers to the pleasure and the good feeling that comes with helping other people (Turgoose et al., 2018).
Compassion satisfaction increases the success of nurses in healthcare.
Compassion satisfaction leads to successful nurse-patient associations and better patient outcomes.
Compassionate satisfaction impacts holistic nursing practice because it ensures the treatment of patient both psychologically, emotionally, and physically (Turgoose & Madoxx, 2017).
Nurses can achieve compassionate satisfaction by being good at their work.

Comparison Between Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction
Compassion fatigue leads to lower patient outcomes while compassion satisfaction leads to better patient outcomes.
Compassionate fatigue negatively affects the holistic nursing practice while compassion satisfaction affects the holistic nursing profession positively.
Compassionate fatigue both affects the nurse and the patient negatively.
Compassionate satisfaction promotes health and well being of individuals (Sinclair et al., 2017).

Self-Care Techniques for Promotion of Compassion Satisfaction
Daily Self Care
Reduce work fatigue by taking breaks in between schedules.
Taking time to learn and connect with patients.
Weekly
Develop self awareness since it is key to self care
Setting emotional boundaries.
Monthly
Reduce work stress by taking vocational breaks and taking nature walks and trips with family and friends.

Planning and Implementation of Self Care Activities
I would implement the self care activity in my own life by making it a routine practice for continuous results.
I would ensure the adherence of the plan by setting constant reminders.
I would include my favorite colleague and one family member in the accountability plan.
Excess patient workload and lack of time offs could potentially prevent adherence to the plan.
I would eliminate the hanging out of colleagues on weekends to promote adherence to my plan since when together we often talk about work topics, an activity which could promote compassion fatigue.

Conclusion
The nursing profession incorporates both traditional and western medicine to promote holistic nursing practice.
Traditional medicine such as therapies and spas promote holistic wellbeing of an individual.
Holistic nursing serves to improve the overall wellbeing of patients.
The concepts of self-reflection, self-care, and self-development are important in holistic nursing practice.
Compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction impact holistic nursing practice both negatively and positively respectively.
