FITNESS ASSESSMENT LAB•Fitness testing is used to help students determine their baseline health-related component fitness standard Each result will be categorized relative to the minimum fitness values for disease and prevention based on normative data.•Results from the fitness test will help students set up goals for the semester and identify risk factors for disease.•Students will record their results on the pre-test/posttest form on the left side in the pretest area. Form can be found in the learning activity section of unit one. FITNESS ASSESMENT•Weight & height-can be measured at home or at a fitness center. Best time to weigh is in the morning without clothes (at home).•Resting heart rate is the number of times the heart beats in a minute first thing in the morning. Prior to getting out of bed, find your pulse on your wrist or neck (radial or carotid artery). Count the beats for one full minute.•Blood pressure-go to any grocery/drug store, college fitness center or your doctor to measure blood pressure BODY COMPOSITION•Body composition needs to be done by a professional at a local gym or the college fitness center. They will use either the skinfold or the bioelectrical impedance method. Both measurements will give an estimate of your body fat, so use whichever method you have available.* Skinfold method. This body composition measurement uses calipers that “pinch” you in 3 different spots on your body.*Bioelectric Impedance determines body composition by using a handheld device that measures fat using an electric current( It can’t be felt). If you are uncomfortable with the skinfold method, this may be a good alternative. Call the fitness center desk on any campus to schedule a time to measure with the handheld device. Anthropometric Measures•Anthropometric measurements – use a tape measure to measure the circumference of the body parts listed. Measure to the nearest ½ inch.•You will measure your chest at the largest area, waist just above the belly button or smallest area, arms in the middle of the upper arm or bicep, hips largest area, thigh in the middle, between the crease of the hip and the knee. Muscular Endurance TestsSit-ups•Sit-ups will be performed lying on your back with both knees bent and both feet on the floor (have someone hold your feet). Cross your arms and place them on your chest. You will perform as many full sit-ups as you can in (1) minute. A full sit-up is where your elbows touch your thighs on the up position and your shoulder blades touch the floor in the down position. You are not performing a crunch or partial sit-up. See picture. Sit – up testThe sit-up test measure abdominal strength. Count the number of sit-ups you can perform correctly in one minute. Push-ups•Push-up test: Push-up position can be modified or standard. Men will use the standard method and women will use the modified method. This test is not timed. Perform as many push-ups as you can in a rhythm, without stopping.
