According to the textbook on interpersonal communication theories and practices, there are two types of needs. One need is the being needs, and the other is deficiency needs(Albone 139). Thus, for an individual to achieve motivation, there is a need to fulfill needs that help foster self-actualization. Deficiency needs comprise physiological needs, belongingness needs, safety needs, respect, and self-esteem needs(Albone 139). Figure one below postulates the hierarchy of needs as stated by Maslow.

It is vital to fulfill the physiological needs sufficiently. Individuals who have not fulfilled the needs are perceived to live in deprivation. They are yet to move to the point of self-actualization, which is indeed the epitome of psychological well-being and happiness(Albone 140). The being need, on the other hand, is comprised of self-actualization. Self-actualization gives birth to motivation, which does not require any external factors to be made available. Hence the physiological needs ought to be met on a timely basis before the being needs are. Through the inculcation of the physiological needs, individuals can work on healthy relationships and equally develop psychologically.
According to the Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability, the hierarchy of needs can be used as a technique in the assessment of needs within a community setting in contemporary society (Aruma and Melvins 19). Physiological needs in a societal environment are vital, and the human race is likely to be extinct if the basic human needs are not available. The notion of Maslow that some needs should be met before others are considered in various communities. For instance, the provision of individuals’ physiological needs, for example, food, security, and water, form a strong basis on which other needs can rest in the human environment. Inarguably, individuals are likely to interact and associate with others to improve their physiological needs. (Aruma and Melvins 26).In the contemporary global environment, the availability of food is a strong developmental indicator. Hence, in the event where there is a lack of water, food, and shelter, there is, in turn, a lack of development at the community level. Thus, through the identification of physiological needs in a society, community development is fostered.
Based on the American Journal of , the Maslow concept has extensive critics as gender-biased and culturally centered. Hence, the concept receives further empirical tests. In this, it is clear that the lack of something results in a need for it (Taormina et al. 156). Equally, Maslow notes that the more the physiological needs are met, the more other needs are satisfied. In the journal, physiological needs are defined as the lack of chemical nutrients either internally or externally necessary for the survival of a body. The extended lack of the required physiological needs is likely to result in death or psychological stress. According to the journal, the physiological needs in the hierarchy are unlikely to be where Maslow describes them to be(Taormina et al. 157). An example is evident from the context of China, where visitors tend to delay eating food until the guest of honor arrives hence postulating the importance of relationship needs over physiological needs.

For instance, in contemporary society, individuals suffering from food unavailability and displacement in terms of shelter should relay the information to receive the necessary aid. Hence, effective interpersonal communication is essential in the negotiation of day-to-day challenges.
Hence based on the notions from all the authors, it is evident that a physiological need presents itself in the event of lack. Equally, the physiological needs are essential, and their satisfaction, in turn, results in the satisfaction of other needs. Additionally, based on the various sources used, physiological needs are comprised of water, food, and shelter. The fulfillment of the physiological needs of individuals translates to the physical and psychological well-being of individuals. However, a lack of physiological needs is likely to be a causative factor of stress.
In contrast, the American journal of psychology criticizes the Maslow hierarchy of needs for classifying the physiological needs to be the most paramount among all other needs. The journal explains that the Chinese community cannot take a meal before the arrival of an important guest, thus placing relationship needs before physiological needs(Taormina et al. 157). In turn, food is not an essential factor. Also, the American Journal of psychology postulates that the physiological needs are culturally biased as the factors seen to affect less fortunate people are less likely to affect the well-off individuals. For instance, food being a basic need might not sound logical to affluent individuals.
