ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

OVERVIEW
We do not have a traditional research paper in this class. This assignment gives you a chance to practice research and topic development in a more abbreviated fashion. You will practice developing a research bibliography for your research project. You will also practice making use of the skills you are developing in the Article Assessment Assignment, to demonstrate how you will use scholarly sources to support your own argument.

INSTRUCTIONS
To complete the assignment, please refer to the provided template and rubric as well as these instructions. They will give you helpful information about structure, focus, and content, as well as additional background information.
• You should choose a specific topic that is relevant to one of the Module 4-6: Week 4-6 themes: War and Peace, Gold, or Writing. Your topic should not be “Gold”, for instance. Instead, you should choose a specific topic that relates to a theme in a way that is relevant to this course. For instance: “Currency design in Africa”.
o Make sure that you have a specific topic that you can develop an argument about—what are you trying to prove is true?
• Please follow the template for the structure of the assignment.
o Please do not include a title page. A title page is required for Turabian format research papers and similar assignments. A title page is not required for short essays.
o You must specifically list your topic in the space indicated.
• You must include ten scholarly sources in the bibliography.
o Citations must be in Turabian formatting.
o The articles must be relevant to your specific topic.
• Each annotation should be three paragraphs long. There is not a specific word requirement, but I encourage you to be concise and to follow these recommended sentence guidelines. This is, essentially, the same process you have been working on in your Article Assessments Assignments.
o Paragraph 1 should be a 1-2 sentence statement of the author’s thesis.
o Paragraph 2 should be a 3-5 sentence discussion of how the author supports their thesis.
o Paragraph 3 should be a 3-5 sentence discussion of how this article fits into your specific topic.
• The articles that you choose must meet a variety of requirements in order to be suitable for this assignment.
o (1) The article must be scholarly. I suggest using JSTOR to help with your search, making sure to select “peer reviewed” or “scholarly”. If you have questions about what constitutes a scholarly article, scroll down to the bottom of this page from the Jerry Falwell Library. You will see a very helpful video about scholarly sources. It is labeled “graduate” but the information is correct for all levels of study (see Resources section for link).
o (2) The article must be substantive. It should be at least 8 pages, not counting pictures/graphs/references/etc. If you find the perfect article that is 7 pages long, feel free to email your instructor (in a timely manner) providing the properly formatted citation and link, to see if it will be approved.
o (3) The article must be timely. It should be published within the last 25 years. If you find the perfect article that is 30 years old, feel free to email your instructor (in a timely manner) providing the properly formatted citation and link, to see if it will be approved.
o (4) The article must be relevant to your specific topic choice. The connection should be clear in your discussion.
o (5) The article must be appropriate for this course. It must be related to non-western history. This likely means that it will be published in a historical journal. If you find an article in, the Journal of Microbiology (for example), you are likely on the wrong track. It also must not be about regions that are typically covered in US History or Western Civilization classes. If you find the perfect article, but it is in a non-historical journal or otherwise does not seem to be specifically related to the history of the region, feel free to email your instructor (in a timely manner) providing the properly formatted citation and link, to see if it will be approved.
o (6) The article must be accessible for you. (a) The article should not be in a language you cannot read very well. (It probably must be in English—see point 7 below.) (b) JSTOR includes many book chapters. Feel free to choose a book chapter that otherwise meets the requirements for this assignment, but keep in mind that it may be more difficult to address the author’s intentions and thesis in using a source that is only part of the author’s work. (c) Do not choose a book for this assignment. There will not be time for you to assess a book properly.
o (7) The article must be accessible for your instructor. (a) You are required to provide a permanent link to the article as demonstrated in both of the citations above. If you do not provide that link, or if the link does not work, your instructor may require you to resubmit the assignment with the proper information, and be subject to any applicable late penalties. Alternatively, your instructor may deduct a 10% penalty from your Article Assessment grade for failing to submit the assignment properly. (b) The article must be in English. If you find the perfect article, in a language that you understand very well, feel free to email your instructor (in a timely manner) providing the properly formatted citation and link, to see if it will be approved.
• Make sure to proof-read carefully for grammar, spelling, and construction.
• Remember to be careful about plagiarism in this assignment. If you use someone else’s words or ideas, you must provide proper citations. And, in general, it is always better to use your own words.

Your first paragraph should be a clear statement of the author’s thesis. Feel free to use a
template to introduce this clearly: “The author argues that . . .”, “In this article, the author
proposes that . . .”. This should be one to two sentences long.
Your second paragraph should clearly indicate how the author is supporting the
argument. If you can’t demonstrate how the author is proving that their thesis is correct,
you may need to review the article’s thesis again. You should look carefully for the
author’s sources (these might be surveys, government records, old letters, cave drawings,
or any variety of other things). You should also look carefully for how the author is
assessing those sources (are these new sources that no one has seen before? Or is the
author looking at them in a different way? Or from a different worldview? Is the author
comparing these sources to a different set of sources?). And, finally, you should look
carefully for how the author is using this evidence to support their argument.
Your third paragraph should make connections between the article and your specific topic
for this assignment. You should explain how this article helps us to understand this topic
better and how it supports your thesis.

Turabian lays out the rules for citation, grammar, and organization in Turabian or
Chicago format research papers. This citation format is a required format for this paper.

Keep in mind that you are required to include a stable URL or DOI# for all materials that
you include, unless you have a hard copy of the article in hand.
3. Include 10 scholarly articles, in alphabetical order, in Turabian format. Use hanging indent
for the source. Provide the annotation in a .5 indent as demonstrated here.

The annotation should include 1-2 sentences explaining the main thesis of the book. It
should also include 3-5 sentences explaining how it fits into your research project and 3-5
sentences on why it is a valuable source for your specific topic. This is, essentially, the
same process as the article assessments you have been working on this term.
Remember that these sources must be scholarly sources. You should choose articles or
book chapters that meet the requirements listed in the Article Assessment instructions
documents. I encourage you to take a look at all of the material available in the Jerry
Falwell Library website to help you when doing your research.
