Introduction

Lack of proper planning time is a problem that has been cited by Merritt (2016), as an issue that affects many institutions of learning. The key stakeholders relevant in addressing this critical issue include administrative heads/principals, teachers and school community. The reason why I includes institution administrators in addressing the problem is because they are responsible for creating policies which teachers and students adhere to therefore, they should be included to revise their institutional policies regarding the teacher-student number ratio and to relieve teachers of the many duties delegated to them to create time for proper planning time. Teachers are also important because they are mainly affected by the issue. The school community can also help in volunteer exercises.
My four main questions to stakeholders are i) How much planning time do you need? ii) Which creative ways can help in adding more planning time? iii) How would institutional administration assist in increasing planning time? iv) Which other school community would assist in creating time to plan?
The time teachers need to plan for their lessons is important to determine because nations which give teachers more time to plan within their contracted hours have a high number of performing students (Merritt, 2016). Therefore when individual planning time is increased instructional learning where all students’ needs are met will be achieved and also through collaborative planning among teachers themselves. It would be significant that institutional administrations understand that when they delegate too much work to teachers, they end up being too tired to have enough time for adequate lesson preparation. Instead, Merritt (2016), states that they can help by hiring additional staff such as counsellors, P.E teachers, extra recess for students, and more environmental and science specialists to boost time for such subjects. The school community like parents and the local community should understand that they can also help in addressing the issue by volunteering in their specialized areas like music, art, to help students in school projects (Overcoming Lack of Planning Time, n.d.).
