MODULE THREE ESSAY ASSIGNMENT

Like all of the assignments in this course, this one requires you to apply what you have learned in the textbook. In the essay assignment, you will use online resources to explore ideas discussed in the textbook. Be sure to use as many relevant terms and concepts from this module’s list as possible. Your goal is to demonstrate mastery of the module content.

For this assignment, you will use the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and find four examples of narrative, two-dimensional art in the mediums of drawing and painting. You must use at least three different drawing and painting media.

The images must tell a story and be representational and naturalistic. They must have action using the visual elements of time and motion and the design principle of emphasis and subordination. They must also include at least two signs and symbols in each work (beyond the figures) to communicate the meaning and tell the story. Be ready to explain all of this as well as how the works use medium and material.

1. Search for drawings and paintings at https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection. Find four examples in different media. Click on the image and save the work to your computer. Note the title and artist.
   1. Search hint: Search for a story you already know from mythology or religion. Then limit by Object Type/Material, choosing drawing or painting.
2. Paste your images into the spaces provided below. Resize, if necessary.
3. Compose your written answers using a university-level, professional writing style. Point to specific places in the work where your information is visible and explain what you see. This is the evidence for your answer.
4. Proofread for errors and to ensure completion.
5. Cite the sources you consulted for this assignment.
