Use this checklist to make sure you have done your paper properly: 1. Use Spellcheck, then print and proofread. Do NOT turn in a paper that has not been carefully proofread. 2. 1500 words (not including the Title or References pages). 3. Name on paper 4. 1″ margins 5. Double spaced 6. Each paragraph indented five spaces. NO extra spacing between paragraphs 7. 12-point font 8. Paper is on the assigned topic and does not veer off topic. 9. Paper has at least four references/sources, and includes a reference for each source in parentheses. The references must include the source of information (journal, book, encyclopedia, website, etc.), page numbers, authors, etc. EVEN if you are only using a fact or idea from someone else, and not directly quoting the person, IT MUST BE CITED. NOTE: Information in your paper MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS! The only exceptions are quotes and other small bits of quoted information…and each of these should not exceed a sentence or two in length. Definitions: Thesis: The main idea or premise of your paper; what the paper is all about. Picking a pertinent and interesting topic within is important. Organization: How the paper is put together. Most papers have three clearly identifiable parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. Mechanics: Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and references using a consistent style. Analysis: How well you “prove” your point or explain and develop your ideas. Evidence: Sources and examples to back up your claims and arguments; also includes the use of “good” sources versus “poor” ones. Style: Style is admittedly subjective. It is that instinctual flow and creative knack that makes a written document memorable and pleasurable to read. It also includes word choices that are unique and non-repetitive.
