Topic:

Identify a situation in which you desire greater teamwork and synergy. What conditions would need to exist to support synergy? What can you specifically do to create those conditions? Are you willing to take those actions? Why or why not?

COLLEAGUE RESPONSE ABOUT TOPIC:

Synergy is when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (covey pg. 274). A situation where I could use more teamwork and synergy would be in my team at work. I recently just started a new job and got assigned to a brand-new team that the company formed. This team is made up of employees from the marketing department, finance department, and tax department, and is led by one of the established partners in the firm. The very first day we all got together, the partner had us spend some time getting to know each other to act as an ice breaker. This lasted for about thirty minutes, and then we dove into the work we would be doing together. As we left that first meeting, none of us really talked to each other, and if there was any communication it was very formal and felt like there was a barrier between us actually talking to each other as people instead of fellow employees.

When thinking about what conditions would support synergy in this group, I think a sense of openness and a spirit of adventure (Covey pg. 277) would be most beneficial. I think if the group as a whole were able to set aside the formal communication they think is necessary in the workplace, and instead talk to each other as friends or just as people in general, then this would allow the group to open up and be more creative in their problem solving process. With that being said, I think this openness is going to be harder to achieve in today’s work environment due to the working from home situation we are currently in.

While it might be more difficult to create this open environment working from home, I think there are several things I can personally do to create these conditions. The first thing I could do is set up a time the team could get on zoom and just get to know each other without a time limit or work pressuring us. This could be through a zoom happy hour, or whatever anyone thinks would work best. If this doesn’t work, I could take a note from Covey’s book and use courage to become extremely authentic in confronting inside truths about our communication issues as a team (covey, pg. 279). This would be very out of my comfort zone but could be useful to ease the stress of communication on the team.

In deciding whether I am willing to take these actions or not, I would say that I am very willing to set up a happy hour and get to know these people better, but I am not willing to confront the inside truths yet. This is because we are all still new to this team and it might just take a little longer to communicate openly with each other. For this reason, I think more time talking in a less formal setting like a happy hour might be beneficial.
