By Chrisitina Stavropoulos It’s reasonable based on the lecture that Augustine saw himself as a sinner from an early age, due to the culture he was raised in. Heavily steeped in Christianity at the time, Augustine was strongly influenced by the Christian worldview, in which the Fall of Adam and Eve lead to the concept of Original Sin. In this worldview, Augustine adopted a view of himself as someone who was “so great a sinner” [1]. A couple of examples in which Augustine demonstrates what is considered sinful behavior, would be that of stealing, as well as his interest in sexuality [1]. Since he was influenced heavily by the Christian religion, and Christianity views sex as something unclean, and something that should not be partaken in for pleasure, but only for reproduction [1]. It makes sense why Augustine would view his own behavior as wrong, since his own religion was telling him that it was, and leading his thought process into a way of thinking in which his actions and behaviors were in opposition to God’s will.
While this may have made more sense to the people in Augustine’s time, I believe this worldview of human nature is very dated. I think that we know a lot more about our human origins to subscribe to old notions of an angry deity somewhere up in the sky getting angry at its creatures for having sexual desire.
It’s a shame, in my view, that Augustine was conditioned to believe the things he did, and therefore live the way he lived because of it. However, I believe spirituality is still relevant in our own personal lives, but I think a more expanded view on what that is, is necessary in this day and age.
