Research & Summaries Question – 20210627f

Your proposal should contain at least two prongs of attack (details will be provided in class) and should be precise and practical enough to execute, yet feel imaginative and inspired. Do not offer trite and abstract solutions: Proposals to “make high school classes more practical” or “educate people about student loan debt” or “inform parents about bullying” are conventional stock answers that fail to inspire change or action. Use your life experiences, perceptions, ingenuity, and critical thinking skills to form your two solutions. Follow the model below. Sample Intro Paragraph on Student Loan Debt America is experiencing a student loan debt crisis. The tuition costs for higher education at our public and private colleges has risen rapidly for decades, and most college graduates start their lives burdened with enormous debt that they cannot break loose from. According to statistics published in 2019 by Forbes, “44.7 million Americans hold student debt totaling over $1.5 trillion, a total that had grown by $29 billion in the prior financial quarter” (Friedman). This suffocating debt places students into financial situations that can take years to resolve. Moreover, this debt carries severe psychological costs as well. In fact, a survey of 829 people revealed that “one in fifteen borrowers has considered suicide because of their student loans” (Tanzi par. 2). Most lower and middle-class college students cannot enjoy a financially stable life until well into adulthood because not only do they have to repay a student loan that is usually greater than their credit card and car loans, but their degrees do not magically entitle them to a job. Many students struggle to find a job even with a degree, and others drop out of college but have to repay their loans anyway. I propose two solutions that can drastically reduce the student loan debt crisis. First, the federal government should limit the maximum amount a student can borrow so that it is no more than 33% of the full tuition amount. Decreasing the maximum amount lent to students will make students more financially responsible for their college decisions and would force colleges to reduce their tuition so that they remain sensible options for students. Second, colleges should take more responsibility for ensuring their students become employed after graduation. If a student is unable to find a job that the degree promises, the college should be responsible for that student’s loan debt. This would compel colleges to lend money wisely and become more interested in ensuring their students find employment after graduation.
