Simulation Exercise
The simulation exercise is going to focus on the technical incident that was occurred in Mount Sinai Hospital. First, there will be planning which will take place to identify the necessary steps to take and what is really required. The technical measures that were set will be exercised to see if they can work in the real world. In this paper, the preventive measures and actions that we’re taken to curb and reduce power blackout in a hospital should be considered. The plan will identify the main goal and objective of the situation, which is to detect if the actual developments and measures will world when implemented.
In planning, there is an orientation seminar that should take place in assisting staff to know the activities that they will be performing. It sets records straight of what is required to be done in order for the simulation process to take off well. Doctors, nurses, other health workers, and subordinates will play a certain role in this. Therefore, they should be present as they are given their roles and what they need to do during this particular time. In this stage, there should also be training and education awareness that takes place for the staff. They should be aware of the importance of what the simulation entails. All the staff should be comfortable with the roles they are assigned, and if not, they should ensure they can play a role in other areas. The main agenda is for staff to assist while enjoying performing their tasks at the same time. There should be no straining, and the faster tasks are handled, the better to assess and analyze the activities that have been done.
The conducting of the exercise is quite tricky and risky. However, it ensures and trains the faculty to know which role they will play in case of the occurrence of the incident. For example, the doctors will be told to ensure the equipment and the states that patients are in are conducive regardless of the incident. The information and technology team will be required to ensure the server of the hospital is not hacked at any given time, and therefore they will play a role in the safety of information and data. It is because when the power goes off, there are many challenges that may arise, such as cyber-attacks and so on. The nurses will be divided into two groups; the first group will take care of patients’ needs together with the subordinate team who provide food and water for patients. They will work for hand in hand to ensure patients do not lack anything at any given time. The other group will work with the electrical staff to ensure that they supervise the operation of equipment used in the organization. The reason behind this is to ensure that, for instance, the intensive care unit is operational and they are working fine to ensure that patients are alive and improving day by day. As the simulation exercise is taking place, the risk managers will be able to outline all the risks, hazards, and disasters that may come as a result of the incident. They will also be able to try to solve the risks as they come so that they can have an idea of the weight at which all of them hold and their impact (Franc- et al., 2008).
The roles will be assigned in a way that people can be able to feel at ease. The rules they will be given will be close to their duties in the hospital, and thus they will not strain. As the situation exercise is being conducted, every team will be developing on what roles they have been given that may fail or be less reliable. There should be ways in which people can ensure they maintain a close look to detect any improvement or underdevelopment. The role played by risk managers is a role that can be done even with other groups as they are in different fields and their experiences are different.
The emergency response team should be able to estimate the amount of time it will take for this to get back to normal. There should be a way in which people can handle the matters and calculate what time it can take for its completion. It will assist when the real incident takes place. The duration taken to handle the incident should be marked as it will help in the preparation and setting measures in case the same incident happens in the future. By preparation, it will mean the resources, manpower, and equipment available. If Mount Sinai Hospital is using a generator in the meantime, they will be able to obtain the rate of its efficiency and the Mount of oil it consumes. Bud getting will be estimated for the purpose of the future and the prevention of failure in case of a real event.
In conclusion, for a hospital, the simulation exercise needs to be extensive. It should cover all areas and ensure thorough training is done. Lastly, analysis and assessment are not usually important, but it is necessary. It will assist team members in airing out their observations and conclusions. It is advised such stages should be done in a participative meeting where they are recorded for future use. When all the staff are open-minded, comfortable, and feel a sense of belonging, the meeting will go smoothly. A simulation exercise is important as it assists in the handling of the crisis in a very practical manner. It is stated to be the best way to determine if preventive measures or rather techniques set will be incorporated and how efficient they will turn out to be (Sullivan et al. 2015).
