Take on a visit to two virtual museums to report on both the experience of the virtual tour and some specific works from the museum’s collections

Your assignment will take you on a visit to two virtual museums to report on both the experience of the virtual tour and some specific works from the museum’s collections.

Your museum review must be 3-5 pages in length. You should explore virtual museums with art from at least one of the periods we are studying in the course (that is, the Renaissance through the current era); see the list of approved virtual museums below.

For this paper, I would like you to review TWO or more of the virtual tours. For each museum tour, you are required to select and discuss at least two specific works in further detail.

Your report should include the following:

(1) A clear introduction and thesis statement as well as a concluding paragraph. You may find it easier to develop a thesis topic after you select specific artworks (see below) The thesis can be as simple as comparing the formal characteristics of the works, similarities in subject matter or content, types of media used to make them, or any other connection you make.

(2) For each of the virtual museum tours you chose, carefully analyze your experience online, and how you think it compares with a physical visit. You might ask yourself such questions as how well the site showcases the collection and location, what works well, whether there was anything missing, and how they could be improved?

(3) As you discuss each virtual museum tour, you should include at least two specific works of art or artifacts from the various time periods relevant to this class. In other words, you will be analyzing a total of FOUR pieces—two for each museum.

(a) Give basic information, including What period are these works from–Renaissance, Impressionist, early modern, etc.? Who were the artists? When were the works completed? Be sure that you include the artist, title, and date of each work.
(b) Give a full description of the pieces and tell what mood or tone they evoked.
(c) Relate the characteristics of the works of art to the time period in which they were created. In other words, if you are describing a piece from the Mannerist period, how do you know by looking at it that it is a Mannerist piece?

(3) Finally, give your overall impression of the virtual museum tours.

(4) Don’t forget your Works Cited page listing ALL sources!

NOTE: If you convey basic facts or information about the art work (date, materials used, meaning of painting, etc.) from the museum website, be sure to credit your source. You may simply say, “According to the museum website,…”
