For our media source, we chose to play a video called “Just say Merry Christmas.” We
chose this video because it has created controversy in the past and is today, still a
controversy about how we should address people during the Christmas holiday season. When
someone says Merry Christmas to another person, that person is assuming that the other person
is part of the Christian, religious group based on either the person stating it being Christian or a
person being ignorant. With this video, the idea of just saying Merry Christmas seems to be
easier than changing everything to happy holidays. By stating that we should just say Merry
Christmas, people of non-Christian religions may be, rightfully, offended, and religious tolerance
is not being shown. Even though this class focuses on America, one of the members of our group
lived in England. In Europe, everyone addresses people saying Happy Holidays, also breaks are
called winter breaks, and there is no found issue of people being offended by this.
For our activity, we will play our video and take the time to unpack it. We can talk about
how we feel about this video and also get some reactions from the students. The students will
also be encouraged to ask questions if they have any and we will answer them to the best of our
knowledge. We plan to ask the class a few questions during our presentation. Some questions
could be: 1. Why do you think that the in the only country where the freedom of religion can be
practiced that people still get offended when Happy Holidays is said instead of Merry Christmas?
