Mindfulness Technique to Relieve Anxiety

There are many techniques for relaxation that are employed to relieve stress or anxiety. Mindfulness is one of the popular relaxation techniques that is deployed by a significant portion of individuals when they are anxious. It is a technique through which an individual response to flight or fear which causes anxiety by paying attention to the current state and surroundings, gently without judgment, hence creating a calm state of mind by bringing outside thoughts into the present (Cirino, 2020).
Mindfulness creates an opportunity for meditation to soften the feelings of anxiety. When on the stage, mindfulness will be helpful to deal with anxiety because it helps one to learn ways to stay with difficult feelings by discouraging one from analyzing, suppressing and promoting. For example, when anxiety grips because one feels is not adequately prepared, mindfulness help the speaker to switch off from a state of unpreparedness by not engaging in the analysis section on how one unprepared is and its impact on the speech delivery (Mindful.org, 2019). Second, mindfulness creates an opportunity for the speaker to safely explore underlying causes of anxiety without expediting energy fighting the fear (Mindful.org, 2019). This creates an opportunity to develop positive cognitions that would replace driving causes of anxiety that could have been established. Third, mindfulness helps the speaker to create space around his or her worries, which eventually leads to the emergence of freedom and spaciousness (Mindful.org, 2019). Freedom and spaciousness relieve stress and anxiety from the speaker because his or her mind is no longer preoccupied with worries but freedom.

Essentially, mindfulness is the process of learning to trust and stay with discomfort rather than fighting and trying to analyze and escape from them. On numerous occasions, I have applied mindfulness and has worked well for me. One time, a local organization that promotes entrepreneurship among the youths and also educates them on how to live positively to overcome stressors in society, had invited me to its workshop to give a lecture to its members. When I arrived, I found other 3 guests had been invited that were senior to me. Fear and anxiety gripped in due to many questions that were running in my mind such as my inexperienced status to address such a huge gathering with such other senior guests. Suddenly, I embraced mindfulness and redirected the thought process that was putting me into trouble and I felt relieved. When I stood up to speak, I was free and felt that I was equipped to address the audience. Surely, I delivered a powerful presentation with no tinge of fear, which is greatly attributed to the successful application of mindfulness to deal with anxiety.
